How can it be that an engineer is required to design a log cabin? I know how, but it strikes me as a bit odd, just the thought of it, given the history of log cabins.
Dave.

Seems that history is completely forgotten. The county agency doesn't know what to think about anything other than stick-built homes. If I don't have a knowledgeable engineer sign off, then the county will go crazy making stuff up just because they don't know anything about it. :confused2:

30 or 40 people...what ya doing...square dancing? 16x34 is a monster deck. Hmmm, this one faces North, and we do get some good wind through a cut in the opposite ridge. 10' would be the max without doing a lot of heavy hard ground work on a 70 degree slope. I'll have to ponder 10' some more & I guess I can knee brace off the posts to the end of the deck.

Birthday party, Sunday School gathering, etc.... doesn't take long to add up to 30 or 40 counting the kids.

Ain't that the truth.

Well more porch is always better but here in NW Georgia we have 2 kinds of rain. There is the slow grey cloud rain with no wind and there is the ones where we have to have the bigger potted plants tied to the rail. The first one is nice to be on the porch if warm enough, the second I have no desire to be outdoors in. With our 8' deep porch and it 2' roof overhang we still get rain blown 2' up on the brick wall sometimes.

For the creekside/North facing deck, I let the terrain dictate and the red oaks said 8' max or your going to do a lot more work. So, 8' it is & I got all the 2x12 joists for it up today. I will splurge on the West facing deck at 12' or so...plenty of room there but I will need a 30+' steel beam to keep from having posts in the driveway area.

Pic's later...it's Miller time:thumbsup:

I got all the foor joists done...18 bronze coated 3" screws in each 2x12:

Then I screwed down some 2x8x16's & some scrap subflooring to keep it from moving around too much until I get it supported. On the log side I had to cut and fit 26 log "spacers" between each joist:

I dropped a section of subfloor and it slid down the ridge about 20', so I got a pic from "down under":

Logs are getting there:

I have 4 rows down and am up to floor level. Tomorrow I will layout the 4 doors and brace the upright logs framing the doors.
