Could you have put a metal strip down on top of your deck joists to help keep any water from wanting to sit tight to the house? Wouldn't need to be much but it would help keep the joists from rotting prematurely as water will want to hold in that area. Even if you don't do the whole thing (I think I read you were covering the porch) you could do the first 4 feet or so on both ends where the water will be able to reach.

Yes I could flash it and the wife was looking at the back(creekside) porch yesterday evening saying she may not want to roof it. I think she will change her mind when the only real covered porch will be the front. A 2' overhang in the back and 4' on the West gable end will offer zero protection in any king of rain.

Either way, the first deck board will not be jammed up against the logs allowing water to go on by. But, leaves will constantly gather and clog holding water & will have to be swept often.

As far as the porches go, I strongly suggest that you put insulation in them if there is a roof. We did that on our two and it was worth many times more that the insulation cost.

I'm assuming you closed the porches in? Why else would you insulate them. ;)

It lets you use them for several more hours a day in the hot summer time. We also have ceiling fans and roll down shades on our 8' deep west facing porch. We can stay comfortable well into the afternoon on a hot summer day. Our smaller screened porch on the back is also more usable. Unless it is cold (or this year 100 or more degrees) we are outdoors as long as there is daylight.

Very interesting. I never would have thought of that. I plan to have porches all the way around my cabin when I get it built. I'll have to remember that. :thumbsup:

I got them framed out, but when I started the tractor to go fetch more logs I had either a water pump or thermostat failure...it was blowing coolant out of the overflow, white smoke, then after shut down I could hear coolant draining back into the block for abour 30 seconds. I loaded it onto the trailer and will have to run it to the dealer tomorrow. This is not good as I use my tractor almost daily on the house build not to mention we have hay on the ground again that I was supposed to bale tomorrow afternoon.
It's always something, eh?......{sigh}
