Keeping Dust Down

I am curious how others keep the dust down on their gravel / dirt driveways and roads.

Many years ago, used oil was sprayed on however that is likely an environmentally frowned on method these days.

We have our choice of 3 companies in the area that will spray the road with ;

Calcium Chloride
Magnesium Chloride
Tree Sap

They all work the same and last about the same amount of time. They spray in May and again in August. 400 feet costs about $390 for the year.

Where do they get that much tree sap to spray a gravel road? Never heard of that.

The only complaint I have had is one guy trailered his new lawnmower past my house about 20 minutes after the road was sprayed with tree sap. He came back about an hour later complaining that his new mower was covered with tiny black specks that he couldn't get off with anything he tried. I told him soap and water will get it off and if it didn't he could call the owner of the company that sprayed it and I gave him the owners name and number. Neither one of us heard from him again.

Tree Sap is a resin. These are products available under various commercial names. The basic composition is lignin sulfonate which is a by-product of the pulp milling industry. The product is sometimes called tree sap in the field.

You could use a polymer-based product mixed with water, such as "polypavement". Used by military for roads and airstrips, roadbuilders to stabilize the dirt.

p.s. I have no connection to the company and have never used it, but I have seen it used in road construction.

That stuff was a worst mess than dust ever was.

The used oil ruined the paint job on my 1960 Impala Convertible back in 1963 or 1964.
