Reason enough to change your own oil

/ Reason enough to change your own oil #41
I ended up buying a BendPak two post lift. Once you get one you actually want to change your oil. In the two months I've had it every grease fitting on all our vehicles have been topped off, two transmissions have been flushed, and everything has fresh engine oil.

I am envious, have always wanted a lift to work on vehicles underneath but I figured it would take longer than my lifetime to get the cost back, even with all the use I would give a lift.

I'm not sure if I'll ever use it enough to justify the cost but I didn't use savings to justify it. But having a lift makes it real easy to examine the underside of your car, something most people rarely do. I'll grease the fitting on my tractor every day when using it hard yet cars and trucks never seamed to get done.

Most of today's new cars and trucks don't even have grease fittings, just sealed suspension parts.

Ok here is one for ya'll-

This week-
Chain quick lube place- waiting on getting my company car oil changed-
Overhear "tech" saying they were out of the Dexos oil required in the new GM car they had in the bay.

Another "tech" told him "that's ok just put regular oil in it, I called corporate and they said its ok"
Oh yeah great customer relations too, the two "techs" were loudly conversing in the bay with customers around, every other word was the F-bomb....

Reason number 257 why my personal cars never go to those places...:confused2:

Like most here... I do just about all the work on my vehicles...

Last year, I took the truck in to have the front end aligned after I changed the ball joints...

The owner suggested rotating the tires since it was included in the price and I said OK...

As the mechanic used an air-wrench... on the left front wheel... I heard him say something in Spanish...

Six months later, I was rotating the tires and found a stud was snapped off and the all the lug nuts were so tight that some had opened the lug nut holes in the rim...

I always torque my lug nuts and go to the tire shop leaving my Hub Caps at home...

So I go right down to the shop and the owner was very apologetic... he knows that I do my work and didn't question what I said at all and this was 6 months later... he offered free future rotations and a couple of oil changes... which I declined...

Wouldn't you know the first time I let someone else do something I always do there would be a problem.

That guy did real damage by being reckless and then covering it up... too bad, because I like the owner and have sent people there...

It still burns me up... plus I had to take off the rotor, go find the right stud, remove the broken one and put in the new one...

No way was I going to let them do an oil change...

I do 90% of my own vehicle maintenance & repairs, as well as repairs to household equipment; I figure that's worth an additional $5000 to $8000 a year, TAX FREE income.... and I know it's done right.

Unfortunately, my garage is a little tight for a lift-- but I sure wish sometimes I had one!

No way would I go to a fast lube place.

I'm going to get a lift some day, sooner than later. I work with someone, and he said he uses a lift just to get the vehicle up in the air to wax the lower part.

I really screwed up when I built my garage. I only have a 8'4" ceiling height. I did find a lift, they advertise it as portable, that will work in my garage. With my ceiling height, it won't get a vehicle up high enough to walk under it, but high enough that you can sit on a low stool and work on it. I'm tired of having a vehicle in my face when working on it, and new vehicles are a pain to get up in the air with a floor jack. I've got two floor jacks, and I about have to jack up both side of the vehicle at the same time to get them in the air.

I bought a brand new car from a chevy dealership It had 6 miles on it. and they did the state inspection before I took delivery.. two days later I had a funny sound in the rear hub cap. took it off and found the axle dust cover in it bouncing around. and the axle jam nut was loosening up I got almost a full turn on it in torgue and then hammered the edge loch inward.
So this was a dealers, and I gues they felt they had to remove the wheel to check the brakes ..LOL they followed the procedure for safety ,yet caused what could have been a safety issue..
