Turning Diameter estimate for Truck and Trailer

Any one have a estimate for how large of a circle it will take to turn this truck/trailer combination around without backing up.

Truck is a 3500 single rear wheel crew cab 8 foot box (22 feet long bumper to bumper) and trailer will be a enclosed car hauler bumper pull 8.5 by 35 feet triple axle.

The largest bumper pull enclosed car hauler I have pulled is a 2 axle 8.5 by 24 foot. I am concerned that a 35 foot long triple bumper pull will be hard to manuever on secondary roads after leaving the interstates. So another way to ask the question is -- how much more "fun/challenge" will I have stepping up to a 35 foot from a 24 foot bumper pull enclosed car hauler?

Too many variables. I have a 35' boat trailer with triples that is 18,000# and it does pretty good with my 06 F-350 SRW 4x4 but I have pulled it with older Fords and a GM and it took more room. 05 and later Fords get much better turning with the coil over front suspension.

Do not worry about the triples. I have to make very sharp turns at the boat ramp each and every time and no issues yet.

As for a measurement, I could not tell you. Plus, boat trailers have he axles placed further back.

Seriously, I wouldn't pull a 35' tongue hitch trailer with a SRW truck. For me, it would be gooseneck and a dually.

Could not give me another dually or GN trailer. Had them both and hated them both. Dually in the snow sucks and can not live without my bed. Plus, you never see a GN with a boat. Just cant handle the brake-over at the launch ramp.


Guess thats why the make both types of truck and trailers. This way we can all be happy.

I agree no way I would want a bumper pull 30+ foot trailer but if that's what what you want good luck.

I have found it easier to get day cab IH with a 40 trailer in tight spots than my old 38 foot ball hitch camper with a crew cab pickup.

Go with gooseneck if you can and 2 axles not 3. I just found its cheaper to have 17.5 that have a 4800lbs rating instead of 16 load range G

Its early and I've only had one cup of coffee, but I don't think the turning diameter will be any larger with the trailer than it is with just the truck. The trailer tracks inside the turn of the truck...:laughing:

Now if the question is "will I be able to negotiate as tight of turns", then the answer is NO.

35 feet is a lotta trailer!

I have a CC dually 8' bed and a 30' enclosed trailer. Not sure about turning radius, but I will tell you it's better on secondary roads than with my 30' gooseneck trailer. The gooseneck turns inside the truck line, the first time I realized that I had rubbed up against a concrete post and put a nice "wave" in my hook rail on the trailer.....the day after I bought the trailer.
The 30' enclosed basically turns in the tracks of the truck, and I did my move from MI to Ohio last year with it, I think 5 or 6 trips.....mostly interstate, but secondary roads mostly in Ohio. Never had a problem.

But.....35'......wow! Can you give it a "trial run"?

I have my Chevy 1500 ECSB 4x4 that I pull our Jayco 32BHDS w/. The camper is 36.5 feet overall. I can pull in my drive and turn fairly sharp so that I can start backing it into the parking space beside the barn (I pull in so the doors face the house so we can unload easier). I can having it facing the other direction in probably 45-50 feet or so. That is turning it at a fairly sharp angle. The street Mom lives on is 40' wide, I wouldn't even thinking of trying to turn around on that road. I did it once by backing it into a fairly wide ally. I forgot about the one end of being closed for construction and I couldn't get out - had I remembered that, I would have made Mom bring Dad to me - he was riding with me to take the camper in for service. It'll be interesting to watch your tires in a turn with the triples vs my tandems.. I find it interesting (and scary) how far my tires/wheels will twist/lean when turn our camper - especially on pavement or concrete. I try to avoid sharp turns, but don't shy away from them either if I need to do it.

I've never been afraid of pulling a trailer, but 35'? Wow, that'd make my palms sweat. I'd be afraid of whacking something with the end of the trailer. It's going to swing waaaay out in a sharp turn.
