People don't have a problem spending taxdollars on average Americans.

Also - the reason the budget appears larger than you're accustomed to is that President Obama is insisting that the budget REFLECTS THE COSTS OF THE IRAQ AND AFGHANISTAN BUSH WARS.

Which is something bush never did.

For the record, the monies spent under the previous administration was with the approval of a BI-partisan congress, much different than what has been spent under the current administration.

I have no doubt that stiffing the customers because their claims are the responsibility of "old GM" is perfectly legal. However it will and should impact what a future customer thinks about "new GM". It affects me and I'll never purchase a product from a socialized car maker.

He's from Holland, their approach to political issues and taxes are different than the US. Most EU countries don't understand how big of a part the US plays in the world's economy and to play that part our taxes must be low enough give US citizens plenty of disposable income to spend (wisely or foolishly).

Yes, the European voter is less interested in how much tax to pay: He's most interested in the bigger picture: How it gets spent and how much he sees back in everyday life: care for the elderly people, infrastructure, the local soccer club, etcetera. The average American is less happy to pay tax, probably because the general idea perhaps is that tax is only to pay their governments paychecks ??

Actually many americans dont have this "plenty of disposable income to spend (wisely or foolishly)" and pay the interest on their credit card with just another loan. When the house market plummeted two, three years ago there was no collateral against these loans: When banks began to auction peoples homes, the value of the houses was less than the debt, which led to big losses at the banks, with effects on interest rates, which created a snowball effect and the economy went down the drain. We can all blame the banks for giving us unresponsible loans we couldnt refund, but hey: arent we all grown up people ? The key to a financially healthy country is financial discipline (as in responsible behaviour) for both government and citizens.
The same happened a year later in the southern European countries, where governments spent way more than their income (e.g. taxes) was, which lead to enormous state debts. The PIGS countries (Portugal, Italy, Greece and Spain) ignore European agreements about national budget deficits and assume the rest will bail them out in order to protect the value (= exchange rate) of our common Euro.

State debts increase interest rates, which make it harder for the private sector to finance their investments. Short said, state debts are a burden on any economy. What has happened in America and southern Europe, is that governments have paid their interest by taking on new loans: This soap bubble is bursting apart now.

Furthermore about the role of the US economy in the world: Then isnt it plain embarrassing that China is the USA's biggest debt owner ??

Hosted quite a few colleagues from the region of Bavaria over the years...

They all really enjoyed the visits here... none wanted to move.

The consensus is that Americans work too much and don't have enough free time...

Many I know there do not really save for a rainy day... they have no problem putting every last Euro into there home... the feeling is the essentials will be provided by the government.

It really is a different way to look at things...

Even something as simple as going to a Home Depot at 7 pm on a Sunday was met with astonishment... the common reply is they couldn't pay people enough to work on Sundays in Austria...

My cousin was dating a Nurse and they do have to work odd hours... it eventually led to their break-up...
