Welding in Haiti

Harvey,
Glad to see you are getting it done. That Lincoln cracker box is what I learned to weld with in high school farm shop class.:)
hugs, Brandi

I am following this thread with great interest and I looked at your link that describes the compactor you are building. It's fascinating, building something with so little for people who need so much. You are giving of yourself which is the best one can offer.

Harv that welder reminds me of an old shop back in the country at a sawmill. THey had an ancient machine shop set up there but the main thing was the welder was made from a 55 gallon drum filled with salt water, it had and insulated wire hanging down in the barrel with a copper plate on the end of it. Then the tank had a wooden windless with the stinger lead wrapped around it. THe part was grounded and to set the amperage you tried the welder if it didnt suit you you wound the windless either lower to the bottom of the tank or awa from it for lowere amps.

I've been to two welding shops where they had tombstones. All the machines are set to the max and all I've seen is 1/8 and 5/32 rods. The welds I've seen are tacks, some one on top of a kazillion more.

Yesterday I watched a welder repairing some stuff at a house. The machine was maxed out but only plugged into 115 volt and he was using a large rod, again tacks.

Even in the shops the welding hoods were hand held. On the street they use sunglasses.

These pictures were taken in a the welding shop at a recycler. We had went there to find some steel. That wasn't going to happen because any steel of value was for sale on the street. The stuff brought in here is worth nothing but for pure scrap.

Great thread Harv ! How bout we send OSHA down there for a visit
You have forgotten more than I'll ever know about welding but for us hacks with sometimes less than ideal gaps a second electrode held like you are gas welding can get you out of a burn through bind.

Man, You are working with Dam- near nothing and doing it well. I hope you can pull it off. Hopefully they won't steal you blind. Please keep us posted as you are doing a job, that most of us would shun??The people there could really use your method to construct new permanent shelter, and move out of tents..More power to you..

I've used baling wire and even the wire on utility marker flags on occasion.

No worrys about stealing but I am careful with the tools that I have to have. That's because the Haitians are just like helpers anywhere, they don't take care of tools like us guys do.
