GUN SAFE

If the guns are oiled regularly, getting them wet won't hurt them. I have a shotgun that has seen years of duck hunting trips, and once was fished off the bottom of a river, that doesn't have a speck of rust on it. Disassemble, dry them out with acetone, give them a coat of CLP, and they will be fine.

The stocks will vary by finish, but it's hard to hurt an oil finished piece of wood.

what is CLP Larry? Most of my working guns are stainless but I have a few older ones that I don't wanna use cause of salt water and the weather. The lighter oils I have used don't seem to offer enough protection and the heavier ones are too heavy:confused:

Clean-Lube-Protect. CLP. It's a Mil Spec product available on the civilian market under the name Break-Free CLP. Anyplace that sells guns will have it in stock.

Weapons waterlogged is correct, I had not seen any water tight safes. I bought mine to keep others from being able to use said weapons againist me or others. My primal fear is coming home and lookng down the wrong end of one of them. After the Kids in Joneboros, ark. took grandfather's guns and ambushed their classmates at school, I was pressed to buy it. Plus my neighbor was surpised when they attacked his safe..SO..??

On my Cannon the door gasket is supposed to melt in a fire and seal the door completely - this is part of the fire rating but I imagine it does a pretty good job of sealing water around the door too. Hope I never have to find out ...

Went to a Fort Knox dealer today. For the Executive they want $3,700 plus $320 tax and $800 shipping. So I am looking at a grand total of $4820, not counting any extras, and there are a lot of extras available.

The way i see it, why should i spend over $5000 for a 7 gauge safe, when I can get the Sturdy safe, with the extras that I want, and it's 5 gauge, for $3000. Oh, and it's larger.

The only drawbacks with the Sturdy safe are, it's not quite as nice looking, and it doesn't have nearly as many locking bolts. But I am told that a safe built with 5 gauge steel does not need that many bolts. Makes sense, to a point, but given the choice, I would still rather have the extra bolts, just not willing to spend an extra $2000 for them.

So I guess Sturdy wins. Anyone disagree?

not to wander off target too much.. but how many of you guys have a dedicated 'truck' gun.. or 'boat gun.

IE.. the gun you toss in your truck when heading out to your rural property.. or out on a boat.

I have a beater semi auto 12g that I got for 95$.. blue has worn white, and the laquer worn off the wood.. but otherwise functions perfectly..

that's one I don't mind tossing in a burlap bag in the truck when fencing or fishing..e tc.

I have a beater cheap nickel plated pump 12 ga I won in a poker game with a sling that goes into the boat, kayak, wherever. I keep thinking about sawing it off and making it more portable but it actually shoots pretty well and has given me many a dinner.

By Male grandchidren, I meant, my 6 year old GS found a loaded 22 auto pistol in a friends car while waiting on his dad? He had it pointing out the window? Both boys are very intelligent and alert, now the oldest has been to gun safety class.. I keep some of my better guns in the silicone gunny bags sold at gun shops. I just hope they don't help with combustion in a house fire. I use the Clp on my black rifle, seems to do the job, and no jams?Interested in the idea of the door seal melting and keeping water out? Never considered that idea.

ahh..

I have no kids, nor do i have guns 'laying around' that would be easy access for kids.. I do have guns ready to grab in case of intruder... but I know where they are..

I think just having a safe (regardless of brand) that is heavy enough not to moved, or bolted down will deter most thieves. I have been robbed and it appears the professional perpertrator takes very little time doing his job. They don't wan't to get tied up trying to force a safe. That said if the thief is determined and is targeting your gun collection he will already know what you have and come prepared to deal with it.

Most thieves are amaturish and oportunistic. They lack the time and knowledge to deal with even a cheap safe.
