The local university (Michigan State) recently had a 60 year old brick smokestack demolished, and according to what I just read, they are selling chipped, cracked, bricks with mortar still stuck to them, for $50 each at the university Surplus Store. In two days they had already sold over 100 of them to people wishing to own a "piece of MSU history"......

Even if I was a fan of MSU, and I am not, paying $50 for a used, damaged brick is utter stupidity.

WOW! And I though I was making a killing when I was selling bricks from the 250 year old demolished Elmwood Plantation for $10 each.

Since it's the University Surplus Store, I'd bet this is a fund raiser. You essentially donate $50 and get a brick.

Actually you are correct, in a way...proceeds go to "The State is Great" endowment, a flexible fund endowment used to meet the University's most pressing needs...likely raises for the big shots there.

Speaking of paper weights. . .

I have a miniature brick from the Acme Brick Company. It's about 1" x 1" x 3" long and has "ACME" stamped on the top with felt glued to the bottom. It's a brick paperweight given to customers from back in the '40s and '50s. It was my father's from when he had an insurance agency. We lived less than 1/4 mile from the Acme brick company in Denton, TX when I grew up. Below the gravel in our road, there was a layer of busted brick (bad runs from the plant) that had been crushed and used for a roadbase surface.

BTW: For those of you not from this area, Acme Brick is one of the oldest companies around the Dallas-Ft Worth metro area. Cowboy Quarterback Troy Aikman has been one of their spokespersons on TV ads for a long time. Acme Brick is probably the biggest brick supplier in Texas, Oklahoma, and Kansas. During WWII, German POWs were used as a labor force in many of their plants including the plant in Denton, Tx.

Years ago they were replacing the Teak decking on the USS North Carolina. I bought a piece, about the size of a brick, for $10 or so. Best I can remember it was the original decking, other than war damage.

If so, the tax payer got their money's worth. To think what that piece of wood went through.

The area covered was around an acre in size. It cost around $500,000 to replace. I THINK that was all raised and donated money not tax payer.

Later,
Dan

Boy, I am dense some days, I always thought Acme Brick existed just to supply Wile E. Coyote....
