Yes, there was what appeared to be debris from machining caught by the magnets. The magnets are very important, and I'm always amazed by how long it took vehicle and equipment manufacturers to realize that a well placed magnet will greatly extend the life of a mechanism.

Greetings all. Came across this thread when I was about to ask the colour of JD trans fluid. I purchaced my 2006(year) 2520 a year ago, with 186 hours. It came from a VERY reputable JD dealer, who had supplied the machine new. I now has 370 hours and, call me old fashioned, I decided to change the trans/hydro fluid - not being sure if the dealer had done a change when they did the trade-in.

However, the original fluid was red (like ATF fluid) and what a surprise - the JD Hy Gard is amber/'normal lube oil' colour. Any ideas what has happened? Did JD change the oil spec at some stage? :confused:

Back to the filter. My manual shows a magnetic strainer arrangement on the right-hand side of the gearbox, but mine has a spin-on catridge filter which I could see was 'original'. Whilst thumbing through the Manual (in English & Italian) I noticed that the Italian section describes (in pictures!) a tractor like mine - with a screen filter at the back, under the PTO. The Italian spec calls for 14.9 liters to refill, whereas the English version calls for 9 liters. No wonder the 2 x 5 litre bottles didn't do the job! :(

I'm probably going to regret this, but why on earth would an equipment manufacturer wnat to dye hydro oil to the colour of ATF?:confused2:

Ask any of us who have orange or yellow dip sticks!!! Coupled with my aging eyes, you cannot easily see the fluid registering on the stick, except by picking up a glare. Ugh.

The dye is actually a very nice thing. I'm sure ATF doesn't come out of the ground red either.....:laughing::laughing:
