Thanks Tommy. Im not sure about the condition of the rod yet - but I know the adjuster/cup piece at the top is broken. Do you have that part?
Definitely hope so, but I question why it happened in the first place. I've seen that happen where the exhaust valve was so carboned up it stuck in the guide and got slapped by the piston. Caterpillar had a recall on some of their 300 series engines over this.Seems like I got lucky??

Strong possibility - that's one of the reasons for the original 50 hr. valve check (I wouldn't wait that long). In a matter of speaking, yes, they are adjusted "loose". That is the gap between the rocker and the valve stem. Unlike most technicians, I prefer to set the valve lash while the engine is hot and running at low idle after it has reached thermal equilibrium.
... but Im thinking some of these might be exessive.
