Injector Problem?

Well - I finally found a few minutes to work on this.. Took Rich's advice with the magnet and got it out. It looks pretty much intact - see pic (other than the head popped off!). The rod has no noticeable wobble when I roll it on a flat surface. Seems like I got lucky??

Definitely hope so, but I question why it happened in the first place. I've seen that happen where the exhaust valve was so carboned up it stuck in the guide and got slapped by the piston. Caterpillar had a recall on some of their 300 series engines over this.

Bob - I wonder if it was actually adjusted loose. I can see how that could maybe cause the top to pop off. Should there ever be a gap when the between the adjuster and the push rod? I turned the engine slowly with a wrench and I can see gaps in some of the others. Think Ill have my bro-in-law (diesel mechanic) come help me re-adjust/time everything when I get the part in.

Strong possibility - that's one of the reasons for the original 50 hr. valve check (I wouldn't wait that long). In a matter of speaking, yes, they are adjusted "loose". That is the gap between the rocker and the valve stem. Unlike most technicians, I prefer to set the valve lash while the engine is hot and running at low idle after it has reached thermal equilibrium.

Yeah, I realize that there should be some play when at TDC, but Im thinking some of these might be exessive. Hopefully the manual will tell me what the lash is supposed to be set to.
