louisiana is trying to pass a law now that if a vechicle has dual rear wheels u must have a cdl or farm tags no matter the weight rating

good grief.

I've heard some states consider a vehicle commercial if gcvwr is 10k or over.. etc..

I know a couple ys ago, fl made all 1 to+ vehicles renew their tags in december even if not commercial... kinda sucks if you buy a vehicle in any other month other than january or june, as then you can get a 1 yr or 6mo tag and no lost time.. any other month and you loose time...

gott laugh because my father will haul 6-1200 lb silage bales on a trailer behind his tacoma because my ton truck doesn't have AC.

We are stricktly Farm use and exempt from CDL but I always wanted a small road tractor. We always had Ford 700's and 800's on the farm and had way less breakdowns because they are built to haul, plain and simple, on the other hand probbably less miles too, hard to say.

Yeah the YOTA gets it share of hay hauling usually will only put one in the back or 3 on the car hauler but most of the time it has the welder or something in the back just cant beat it for everyday ranch work.

But the gvw on the Dodge is 12,200

SOME KY LEO's interpret law as, any truck with a trailer rated 10,001gvw or above is subject to same laws that apply to commercial vehicles......even if not commercial. It's then up to you to convince a judge it isn't.

Being close to Indiana, it's not uncommon to have a need to cross state lines into Indiana....They consider ANY truck with out-of-state tags, pulling a trailer rated 10,001 gvw or higher, as "interstate commerce" until you can prove without question that it isn't. Once they have you sitting on the roadside, the inspection begins. They'll ALWAYS find some nit-picking point to start writing.....

Laws are laws.....How they're interpreted on a local basis is a whole 'nuther issue. When you're parked along side a highway with a State Trooper writing away, laws as you understand them don't matter as much......And it makes little difference to me anyway....Everything in the inventory ('cept the wifes car) is "commercial".......$$$$$$$$$$$$

After reading the entire thread, and understanding what you are trying to do, I will give you my insight. Unfortunitly I do agree that it sounds like you just really want a 550. If you already have your 350 for going to the lumber yard, and plowing snow, do you need another? Also as soon as you drop that GN into your bed, no more sheets of plywood on the way home. You would still have to go home and drop the gn, so you could switch trucks......Have you ever pulled a 30-35' gooseneck? I doubt it would be any easier then your current setup (dump w/ tag) All of the rigs mentioned are going to be about the same length, and are going to be a PIA to run and get things during the day unless you drop your trailer.

I totally understand your want for the does everything truck, but honestly that is extremely hard to do. I've been there and done that, my daily driver is in my garage with the 9' door, and my truck is in the barn......Does your dump fit into a 9' o.h. door? Can you pick up your boy from pratice in that? can you throw 50 sheets of plywood in that? In my opinion, a better tag is the best bet for now......You have some hard decisions to make, good luck....

he could get a pop up GN ball, or 5th wheel rails and then use a GN adapter. either would leave him with a flat open bed when he needed it.

Why?

Why? again?

Why would a 1 ton or 1.5 ton, and say, a 30' gn hauling a tractor and batwing on a dual tanden ( all weights being ok ).. be illegal or need ANY CDL as long as it is non comercial. IE.. hauling your tractor to / from your property for solely your own use.

if it's under 26k and non comercial.. sounds like plain old class E drivers license territory to me.

1. anything over 26,000lbs requires a CDL unless you have a farm exemption or an RV. And that's GVW rated, not what it actually weighs. so any dual tandem trailer hooked to anything (a freaking half ton if you wanted) would be over 26,000lbs. Ask your state patrol or check your DOT website.

2. RIF, HE's CUTTING COMMERCIALLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Anything over 10,001lb CGVW rated requires DOT numbers (depends on state, but most do, check FMCSA website), anything over 26,000lbs requires CDL (all 50 states).

#2 is why I bought a road tractor/lowboy....It's overkill, yes, but I'm not at the mercy of a well intended but otherwise no so careful employee balancing the load a little front heavy....

exactly.
I'm 20,000lbs UNDER weight.
I can drive 200 miles to a job site thru 2 mountain passes safely and under control and make money. (yeah, happens tomorrow)

.

I know of 2 half tons that are under 6k.. wouldn't that then make a pair with a 20k d/t GN legal.. ( and almost useless very likely as you would have way less tow vehicle and too much trailer.. etc.. )
