i will take a guess and say since the last patten filled acording to the tag says 1963 that it was made in 63 are later since before had how can you have a patten date instead of saying patten pinding

Or could the date mean the date that the patent expires??? And maybe it is an early 58 or late 57 D-17????

thank you sound guy for posting pic's .. Let the debate begin . Do patents expire ? the last 1 is a canadian one 1965 . That's my guess as for the year. I have some others pics as well if anyone thinks that may help . that is the model and the serial number in the photo right ?

Patents do expire -- US utility patents now expire after 20 years, US design patents after 14 years. Formerly, utility patents lasted only 17 years.

I don't know about Canadian patents.

I believe what you have is a 1957 D17.

I was doing some googling and getting a little conflicting info, but some places list the the D17 starting in 1958 @ SN 4300.

But others list them as starting in 1957 @ SN 1001. So I believe this is what you have got.

But whatever year it is, I believe it is definatally pre 1960's, because of the metal allis-chalmers logo. The later D17's had it painted on the hood. NOT a metal plate.
