Internet options

Of the two, Wild Blue usually gets the higher reviews. I had it for 3 or 4 years and it worked ok except when it rained. I fixed that by putting a plastic bag over the LNB.

i do not have one good word to say about satellite internet. you highly over pay and get crappy limits crappy speed and insane PING [u probably wont know what that is unless u play video games online..] fiber op internet is about as fast as its ever gonna get.. and its just like the telephone lines and hydro lines the city's have it first but they are gonna have to run the wires out to the rural areas at some point, so just get it over with!

I had Hughes Net for years and hated it. I had multiple issues and they sent out techs to fix it every time. I've had everything replaces at least twice, and sometimes four times. They even replaced my cables. Each time it was a different company that came out. Hughes hires local companies to service and install their systems, and you never know who will show up. What will happen is that guy will spend his time there badmouthing the previous guy, and the guy who comes next will do the exact same thing about the previous guy.

Customer support is in India. They are alright, but you have to play the game of working your way up to somebody who will really help, or send out a tech to fix the problem. Expect to spend hours on the phone playing this game.

If it rains, it wont work. If it's cold out, it migh not work. If it's windy, cloudy or just because, it might not work. Residential sattelite systems are limited in how much power they can have, kind of like over the shelf asperin compared to prescription strength.

They use remanufactured equipment and if a tech shows up with three brand new, unopened boxes, you still might not get one that works. I speak from experience. And after waiting another week for three more brand new boxes and getting one that worked, it lasted one month past the warrentee of six months.

At the time, I didn't have any other options.

I've found that as cell service and technology increases, areas that didn't have coverage now do. When I bought my land, I couldn't get a signal with Verizon. Now I have a very strong 3G signal and I'm waiting for them to upgrade it to 4G before I upgrade.

If I had to do it over again, I would strongly consider a slow, but reliable phone line over satelite. For all th money that I spent, and for the days it worked well, it wasn't worth it for the days it didn't work, and all the frustration it caused me with trying to get it to work.

If you get Satelitte and have to call customer support, tell them it is clear skies outside when you call. No matter what it's like outside, the only thing that will keep them talking to you is if it's clear skies outside. Anything else and they will tell you to call back if it doesn't get better when the sky clears up. Clouds are such a huge issue for satelite that the wont even talk to you about an issue if there are any clouds in the sky.

Good luck,
Eddie

I use the Verizon hot spot 3g. I have a plan of 10gigs for $80. There is no other dsn or cell signal available in our OK area. It works pretty good but reception can be iffy. I want to look for a cell signal booster for the hotspot.

Hello All,

I live where I can not get cable access, and the cell reception is terrible. My kids now use the internet for school projects, so I need to do something. I know satellite internet does not get good reviews, but it is my only option. Any opinions on Wild Blue or Hughesnet? Anything, or any other options I'm missing?

Thanks.

Jim

Where do you live?

Have you asked neighbors or people at the school what options are available?

There may be a WiMax or Wisp provider in your area that can provide service. My inernet is a provided by a local ISP via a wide are wireless system (Motorola Canopy). My ISP's website does not mention this as a service they provide. I asked them about this and they said there was no need as word of mouth keeps them busy enough. I know I've personally referred 4 of my neighbors to them, and found out about the service myself through another neighbor.

I have Wild Blue and the only thing blue about is it how sad I am waiting FOREVER for it to work. I think Eddie may have it right to just go with dial-up.

I had dial-up before Hughesnet and there's no comparison in speed, at least for me. Hughes is many times faster than my dial-up was. It also depends what plan you have. I have the fastest residential plan. I really don't have any weather related problems with Hughesnet. I'd like to get Suddenlink but it's not available where I live. I'm about 1/4 mile from a Suddenlink line.

They tell you right up front that satellite is not for online video gaming nor VPN because of the inherent quarter second latency.

As for clouds, they are not a problem with Wild Blue. Only the rain and only when it collects on top of the LNB (plastic cup).

sprint roaming on broadband usually doesn't hurt bandwidth.. and shouldn't cost any more.. I rarely roam.. but sometimes do.

no biggie.

as long as I don't get in an EDGE only area i'm fine.

edge is slooooooow

i was never told it wasnt for gaming. i was told it was the same as broadband. and it was your average run of the mill high speed internet. the government who PROMISED it is still convinced its the same as they get in there office and when you say its not they send someone out to "fix it" when they actually make it worse.. you can tell any of the a$$holes selling this stuff has never used it day in and day out
