VERY expensive beet juice!

Any concerns with WW fluid reacting negatively to rubber or tire patches / adhesives used in tire patches in the case of a future flat?

If I can source it for a decent price then it sounds like it may be the way to go.
I honestly could care less about the reaction of WWF and tire patches.(no offense intended).............

But if it leaks and kills my crops, and/or keeps next years crops from producing......and/or kills and/or harms my pets or wildlife in any way.............yes............I have a problem!

EDIT: And as I said earlier, Rimguard claims that it can stop leaks, in tubeless tires. And after seeing firsthand what Rimguard does...............I believe it.

But with all the above said.............I have no info on the 'beet juice' that has been made available to residents of Canada.............

You are on your own to do the investigative research of the product.

One plus for weights is that they won't ever pour out onto the ground if you puncture a tire.

I've been thinking about what makes beet juice better at resisting freezing and have come to the conclusion that it is probably a colligative property resulting from the sugar content. Wonder if mixing up a syrup of plain old cane sugar and water would behave the same?

I've just assigned myself a new experiment for the winter...I'm going to mix up a saturated gallon of sugar water and leave it setting on the deck. If it doesn't freeze then I've just invented my new tire fluid!

You must have taken a nappy in HS chem class, eh? Google "freezing point depression of ionic solutions".

-30 f Windshield Washer Anti-freeze is about $3.00 per gallon....and would appear to the the lowest cost DIY alternative (without going to CC). One of the Mart's is likely the cheapest place to buy it. It's not as heavy as cc or beet juice....but it is lower cost and weighs about as much as the RV antifreeze. A flat tire does not pollute like others....IMO.

I would not dillute the RV antifreeze if you live in the north country.....and it costs more than RimGuard around here. No advantage in it for ballast....as I see it.

I run Rim-guard. No regrets. :)

The cheapest solution is to go to the junk yard and get used antifreeze. Typically will be mixed to -30F or lower and will be about $1 a gallon in 50 gal drums.

That is the cheapest solution, but is it the safest for livestock/crops?

EDIT: and one should keep in mind, that used antifreeze...........can become quite corrosive to metals after time.

Ethylene Glycol - automotive antifreeze - is out for me even though it would work - because of the risks it poses to pets and livestock. The only anti freeze I would consider is Propylene Glycol (RV) because it is not toxic I am told. I'm looking to look for it in concentrated form.

Nope, no 'nappy' for me. That's why I understand that colligative properties depend only on the number of particles of solute and not their chemical properties.

You are correct that an ionic compound of relatively low molecular weight is more effective because it puts more particles into solution per mass unit, but that doesn't mean that whole nonionic molecules don't have a similar but less pronounced effect. But now that I think about it I realize I've already proven myself wrong with an experiment done in my own kitchen. Flavored ice pops are loaded with sucrose and they freeze at normal household freezer temps, so sucrose must be too big a molecule to build up a large particle count before it saturates.

So I wonder what the chemical is in beet juice that makes it effective and yet non-corrosive? And I wonder what nonionic, water soluble compound of low molecular weight can be bought cheaply in large quantities?

just like you can buy EG radiator AF, you can also buy PG radiator AF, not just the rv holding tank stuff either.. the real concentrate, not a premix, the stuff made for the rad.

for instance.. prestone sells 'lowtox' as it's form of PG af for the radiator.. etc.

II'm going to be adding some sort of ballast to the wheels / tires - either weights or Rim Guard. I haven't found a source for WWF yet. I guess RV antifreeze might be an option.

My dealer loaded my rear tires with RV anti-freeze for free.

I like the way they ride. It is potable and non-corrosive.

All these posts, and NO mention of that old classic- calcium chloride. Farmers have been using that since rubber tires replaced steel. Is corrosion really that big a problem? (they keep their machines for decades)
Also, most farm tractors around here have weights, front and back, but they are tillage machines.

" Rim Guard"...........and "Rimguard", are two totally different products.

OK....so what's the difference? I didn't know this, and couldn't find any distinction between the two on the web.

Neat. I'll start looking.
