And then it can become a whole home loan issue (trying to get a loan on a farm is hard these days).

Carl,

Tell me about it. I've tried EVERYWHERE to refi my mortgage, but NOBODY will touch my 51 acres unless I can increase what I put down from 10% to 25% or more (and even then the terms stink...).

It is darned hard to finance acreage right now...

They have to charge sales tax on heating oil.. Here in VA its 5% (+ any local tax), so depending on the price it may or may not cost more than off road fuel..

How can they tell the difference between heating oil and off road When it's all the same stuff?
All fuel has a sales tax including on road.

Does this mean there is sales tax on heating oil but not on off road.

It would be up to the seller (local oil company, retailer) to know the difference and tax accordingly.. I do remember seeing kerosene pumps at retail service station have signage that said 'sales tax' was included in the retail price listed on the pump

At least here in Virginia (and most if not all states)- on 'road' fuel has a 'fuels tax' with is currently at $0.175/gal.. it varies state to state, and ranges from as low as $0.10/gal up into the mid $0.30/gal

The sales tax is a percentage of the total sale price..

At least here in VA - I am pretty sure HO has sales tax, which the is collected and submitted to the Dept of Taxation.. Years ago I audited a local oil company and they were including sales tax on HO and kerosene delivered locally.. (original statement - see next for clarification)

Edited to add for the above statement- there is an exemption on HO sold to individuals for heating a home, heating hot water, and cooking - all other uses would be taxable.. (as an example when I got propane tank set at our house and filled - they wanted to know if it was for heating, cooking and/or hot water, but since we used it for our gas logs, it was not sales tax exempt)

Off road fuel sales (gallons) have to be reported to the DMV but 'fuel tax' is not collected on it.. I would have to check but I think 'sales' tax is collected on it by the seller (oil company) and submitted to Taxation. Ill double check with a coworker that used to work for Taxation..

Here in VA everything gets taxed one way or another.. I once asked a Taxation auditor what items they collected tax on - His reply was they tax anything the DMV (rental vehicles, IFTA, and fuels) and ABC (alcohol) doesnt tax.

Our area truck stop sells off road. I buy 55 gallons of offroad diesle in the spring and it lasts me until fall, and through the winter I just refill the 5 gallon jugs as needed. I end up about 10 gallons short on my summer needs but I only use 20 gallons through winter and not worth the risk on storage.

I really need to do this. Need to find a drum first.
