Starting issues with john deere 2040

Yes ill need to do that for sure. I also didn't have anything hooked up, by that i mean the electronics didn't work in the first place, such as spedo, tacho, etc. But i dont think that would of made a difference. I was trying it out in like 4th gear, probably way too low. I also put an add on craigslist for someone who might be able to come out and help me out. I also called the Van Wal dealer to see if they could come out, but the manager wasn't there so ill just have to call back monday.

Just from looking at the transmission speed charts 4th gear would require almost 4 times the pulling effort compared to 8th gear. Recognize that pulling in 4th gear at 4 mph would equate max rpm on the tractor engine. Pulling in 8th gear at the same 4 mph means the engine is turning over about 600 to 800 rpm, that is much easier to do.

If you wan't to see if the tractor will start and get a chance to circulate the oil you can run a hot wire to the injector pump and pull the tractor, just be careful.

The 2040 never had an electric shut-off on the injection pump. They had a shut-off cable. Unless it has had an engine replacement or a different injection pump installed. If it is a later 2040(above 350,000), the shut-off knob should be on top of dash on right side. Make sure the knob is pushed in. On earlier 2040's the knob is on lower left side of dash, near your left knee. If you pull start these tractors, you don't even need a battery or alternator.

Good to know about the manual fuel shut off, my older 820 has an electric fuel shutoff so I assumed the newer 2040 had that also.

Do you agree to using 8th gear to pull start?

No electrical connections or battery required for this model 2040 to be pull started. It has this to stop engine(RE10597 PUSH PULL CABLE)

Good news and bad news. Bad:theres water in the hydraulic fluid, which we knew about because of the bad pump which will most likely get rebuilt. Good: they got it running by reattatching and replacing most wires and replaced the relay.
