While putting on some wheel weights I noticed extensive orange bailing twine twisted around the inside wheel hub. It is near impossible to get it all off. This is a potential problem in that it may work its way into and past the rear wheel seal and cause leakage or damage to the seal. It is spun so tight on both wheels it may force dirt underneath to corrupt the seal.

What can I spray or do to rot the twine?

A.-----Spray acid on the twine? The seals and the steel are more protected?

B.-----Untuck my personal firehose out of my sock bent it around the big tire and let loose?

C. -----Forget it nature and time will rot the twine without damage?

D.------Dig at it with a long thin knife while laying on my back under a dirty tractor?

E.-----Delegate the job to one of the male children that are too busy to help, live too far away and never help out anyway?

F.-----It is Sunday, pray to God in church for a miracle?

G.----Ask for help and ideas from the fart smellers, I mean the smart fellers on tractorbynet?

I believe asking advice is the true only way to go. "G" is the solution.

Get a hook type carpet knife (big box stores carry them) You can then slide the knife under the cord and cut it free... may take some time. You might try to also get a piece of steel wire under the cord and heat the wire with a torch to melt through it (if it is poly type) otherwise burn through it.

Good luck!!

Pretty good chance that the twine IS your axle seal at this point. If the damage already has been done, removing the twine will guarantee a leak. Unless you are prepared to do seal replacement immediately or tolerate a leak of unknown magnitude, I'd vote for trimming loose ends and leaving the rest intact.

The orange poly twine won't rot away. It last a very, very long time. The only way I have found to remove it is with a good sharp knife and a lot of time and patience. However, I would listen to Ricks advice about the seal as he has more experience in this field then I do.

if you want it off then your only choice is to cut it off.you can use a box cutter pocket knife or scissers to cut it.

i would have to agree because the twine has most likely got into the seal since it is tight on there just leave it be until u find out how hard it is to change the seal and when u are able to do the job or have it done also if it is plastic it is most likely melted on the axle

yep.. carped knife or a set of oring pics and unroll it.. lastly, disassemble the hub / axle to get it out, as it WILL crowd and hog the seal out...

I assume it is turning with the axle, and therefore rubbing against the seal.
IF it is free on the axle and stationary with the housing then maybe not so critical.

But I'd be for removing it with plan to replace the seal at the same time. If you can cut enough to get ahold of an end to unravel, would be the simplest.

I picked up a rototiller that had a nest like that on both ends. Really time consuming to remove.

victronox the same people who make swiss army knives make a cheapo ss flexible blade serrated knife that you can twist into tight spots to cut line. I use them all the time cutting line out of boat wheels and the nice thing is when you break one it is less than 4 bucks.

I got some orange twine on my front axle (3320)-I noticed the leak. Pulled what I could and cut what was exposed. Leaked stopped but ultimately it started leaking again and I had to replace the seal. If I had to guess I would say I got another 50 hours out of it before replacement.
