When was your house built?

My house was built in 1840, and to my understanding was on 150 acres which sold (land only) in 1827 for $25.

Lol...just imagine how much land you could get for $25 today.....

My house was built in 1880. Granite and Feldspar foundation built from local rock/boulders located here via ice age, from the Niagara Escarpment (Canada). Foundation walls are 5ft deep, 24" wide with house framed in actual 2x8 rough sawed oak (floors/roof) and actual 2x4 rough sawed oak for walls.

None of the original windows remain, but I still have all of the interior doors, decorative hinges, porcelin door knobs, and the ol' skeleton key style locks.

House obviously pre-dated electricity and indoor plumbing. That appears to have been added sometime in the late 50's. The original spot where the outhouse used to sit is a sunken spot in the yard. In fact my property record with the county still has the outhouse building on the print and the dimensions match the sunken spot in the yard.

I had to abandon the old hand dug well in 2007 and drill a new one. Old well originally had a hand pump and was, to my amazement, only 10 feet from the outhouse. Well was 30ft deep.

1920 with a complete demolishion and redo of everything that was not 1920.

What does that say about 1920?

Hey, I've got a house built in 1923 that a family member still lives in. Really cool old wood frame house that rarely needs a/c except in the hottest part of summer. My other house was built in 1981 and a farm house built in 1940's.

Amazing - almost 300 yrs old. Must be on some oldest houses list. Our first house was in Enfield. Built in 1865 and looked it. Yours is very nice.

Thanks Gordon,
Surprisingly there are houses around here that are older, going back to the 1680's.
The front part of the house was built in 1835 when Benjamin Green converted the house to a Tavern, Green's Tavern.... I've been told it was a brothel at one point as well....

In 1721 it was a stage/carriage stop or public house....

The house was built by a guy named Asahil Marcy who built a Bloomery down the road which made Bog Iron, some very early shoots of the Industrial revolution...

Regards,
Chris

In my grandfather's papers was a letter describing how he traded a team of horses for 160 acres on the Siuslaw River. When he went to inspect the property, he found it was totally worthless land. It had never been logged, and was covered with timber 8' to 12' in diameter. He allowed as how he hadn't been taken too badly, because the team of horses was worthless too.

This was only a little over 100 years ago. Values change.

Our house was finished and we moved in on April 1, 2005. It was the day before my wife's birthday. Ours is a 3 bedroom, 2 1/2 bath, 2,100 sq. ft. plus with 2 1/2 car attached garage. Our children are grown so it is plenty of space for the two of us. We have 2" x 6" wall framing. The additional insulation makes the house very efficient to heat and cool. The best things we did were the nine foot ceilings and my 8 ft high shower head in the master bath. I am 6'5" and I was sick and tired of low ceilings and shower heads that sprayed my belly instead of my head. I also have large mirrors hung so I don't have to bend over to see when I shave or comb what's left of my hair. :)

I built my house in 1994. We did everything but the electrical, heating, rough framing and drywall. I'm a bricklayer so it's all brick and stone.
