1949 Ford 8n
Hey everyone, somewhat new to tractors, only 15 but very mechanically inclined. Im wondering how to get out the valves on a 49 8n. I have a valve spring compression tool but its too small, its made for lawn tractors i believe. I have very low compression and have gunk around the valve seats
from it sitting for 15+ years. Freed up the cylinders with M.M.O. and used ATF for the rings after and have yet to re-install the head. What size should the tool be to get off the valve spring retainer clip? How should I clean the seats? Wire wheel, fine sandpaper? Any suggestions/input are greatly appreciated.

No valve spring tool is required.

The valves/guides/spring/retainer/etc all come out as an assembly. It is held in place with a little fork looking peice that has a tab with a hole in it to pry out. Once that clip is out, the whole thing should pop out. Make sure the cam isnt applying pressure to the valve though.

And just FYI, 8n's were only 6:1 compression anyway. But it sounds as if you had a stuck motor. If you have it as far appart as I think you do, probabally would be worth the 300-400 dollar rebuild kit.

I only have the manifold, head, and valve covers off. Ill try to get the assembly out tomarrow. How should i clean the seats when its apart, wire wheel, sandpaper, steel wool? Once its all cleaned up I'll get a compression reading.

i'd hand lap them with a rolley-roller tool and some lapping compound.. etc.

I tried to get the clip out earlier in the night, is it like a C-clip? I believe it is recessed up in the block about 1/8 of inch. Should i just pull to spread the tips? Its above the spring right? And hey, go figure, on my first post i get blessed by soundguy! Haha but seriously soundguy, how long have you been on this board? Thats a crazyy number of posts!!

IF you havent yet, you really need to purchase the IT shop manual for that 8n. They can be had about anywhere online. And it will cover a lot of this stuff as well as pictures
