Wheel spacers to allow Tire Chains on 4310

Caution:

If you're going to shorten your cross chains (width) and then lengthen the side chain to "raise" the side chain closer to the tire shoulder two things can happen.

1. As the chain moves it will tend to try to peel itself off the tire.

2. Additional torque on the chain could cause premature wear and failure.

The side chain is supposed to rest on the tire sidewall. Correct fitment allows the chain to move and sit properly on the tire. A chain that is too wide or too narrow will tend to give you some headaches down the road.

BTW...nice tip on the wheel reversal.

That hasn't been a problem at all for me, nor premature wear or failure. And there has been no sign of the chain trying to peel itself off the tire.
That has been my experience in the last 12 years running the chains I made in my pic posted earlier.
I've been running chains on my tractors for over 50 years now. :)

BTW, tirechains.com recommends 2.5" minimum clearance between the fender and tire sidewall. That, on an average man's hand, is about 3 fingers width. So, if you can get three fingers between your fender and sidewall, you need no spacers or tire/wheel swapping.
3 Fingers also works quite well as a measure for one's favorite distilled beverage too, BTW...

Not sure, but if the dish is deeper on the outside now probably not, due to inside wheel well clearance. you will have to measure.

Do you want to put chains on?

yes i want to put chains on but the way it is now with the blower mounted there is no room, maybe one inch.

Your turf tires are fine without changing
them/flipping them.

If you use the ladder chains and
chain tensioners you should have no
problems.

If your wheels are large enough you
should buy the chain tensioners that
have spring spokes to tighten the chains
at all times after the ladder chain is fully
tightened on the inside.

You will most likely find that letting air out
of the tires and then mounting the ladder
chains and the chain tensioners will be the
easiest way to mount them.

I'm afraid you're wrong on both counts, Leonz...

rayclar's rear turfs are probably 41-14-20's. If so, and the wheels are set in the stock (valve stem out) position, there's only about an inch of clearance between the sidewall of the tire and the fender. That's not enough for the size of chains required.
Reversing the tires (don't need to swap side to side with turfs) gained me a good 2.5" per side...quite enough clearance. I have before and after pictures posted on this thread's post #7 , BTW.

rayclar, before you do this, take JB4310's advice and measure from the flange of the wheel to the face of the hub, both outside and inside (just one wheel will do the job). If there's more then 1.5" difference (inside being the greater dimension), it's worth the change. I'm pretty sure you have the same wheels and tires as I have on my Deere 4400, but still measure the wheels as described.
If you do decide to reverse the wheels, be prepared for the weight (especially if they're filled).

BTW, I got my chains from www.tirechain.com. Do not wait too long for purchasing as they do run out of the more popular sizes and don't restock until Spring. I have 4-link ladders on the rears only and they work very well. My drive is fairly level.

I had same issue. Here are pix of wheels mounted "in" and "out". Did not need to use spacers. The first pic with chains shows the lack of clearance. Have not remounted the chains since moving wheels out so I don't have an pic of that.

The answer is, certain ones are not reversible.

Most can be flipped, even turfs like Roy showed. But I have seen some very wide turfs where the dish is very deep, those could not be flipped.
