PTO Generator - which one to choose

Soundguy and JB4310, thank you for the information!
If that generator comes back on CL, reckon I'll go check it out!

remember.. kw rating is what it's max output CAN be.. not what it always is.

as a general rule of thumb, you can get 1 kw of power from about 2hp of tractor pto.

that means if you have a 20hp pto tractor you can make about 10kw of power. it don't matter if you have a 50kw genny head.. you'll get 10kw out of it.

works the same way in reverse. you can run a 100 hp tractor on a 20kw head.. even thought he tractor could run a 50kw genny, it will run a 20kw genny.

in most all cases, fuel usage on a diesel will be based on load. ie, 2 more or less equally efficient tractor engine, one a 15hp model, one a 30hp model, both generating 5kw of power on a genny head.. are gonna use ABOUT thesame amount of fuel.

as was stated earlier.. pto rpm effects frequency .. etc.

Thanks for clarifying Chris.

Looking at one also. Embro Manufacturing builds a nice one. (Wallenstein.)

I've never heard the tractor (35hp) or the lawn mower (22 hp) crack the governor during power outages, even when the 3 1/2 ton A/C turns on.

I doubt whether all the house and barn loads ever kick in at exactly the same time (furnace, well, freezer, A/C, stove, garage doors, etc/ So a HUGE starting power load capability is never demanded.

Around here, we use what we have. Sure, a 4020 100 hp job would be nice, but that probably would leak more fuel than my 1070 uses for electricity.

What sound guy said, plus taking 15 kw out of a 25 kw genny may be more stable power than squeezing 15 out of a 15KW generator. Due to the heavier spinning mass, and the "fly wheel" effect.

JB

for sure you will have built in thermal overload protection too.

Must be AVR. If AVR regulates the voltage then it must help keep the HZ in line as well ???

My 10 kw is capacitor regulated and I have to manually adjust throttle to stay within spec during large load changes.

I wonder how big a difference the avr makes and how much it can compensate for??

JB

AVR does not have the ability to adjust frequency.

Howdy,
Remember, PTO generators have an average conversion of needing 2hp for each 1kw made. With this in mind, you could have a 25kw pto genset, and power it with a 20hp tractor. It just means the max power output will be in the 10kw range. The surge of power requirements would be smoother as well, since the larger rotating mass would smooth out the needed surge. Now if you used a 10kw pto genset with a 20hp tractor, and you are running around maxed out say 8kw and a pump starts and surges to 12kw to start and then levels off to 10kw, that surge will be scene in engine drag and pto speed which will need some throttle re-positioning.
When looking over PTO generator pricing, a lot of times moving up in KW does not change the price a hole lot. It's always nice to have room for expansion too.

Flawed logic.
The engine's governor will respond to the load faster than the human hand on the throttle lever will. If the governor can't initiate enough fuel delivery to maintain the ERPM setting, moving the throttle lever won't, either. The average mechanical injection pump on a tractor receives the same or higher maximum fuel delivery from governor action than it does from the throttle linkage, never lower.
