PTO Generator - which one to choose

Generator governors have FULL throttle authority. IE, thay have control of all the engines available HP. Tractor governors do not have full throttle authority. They only hold sway over a small ammount of the tractors total available power...
Wrong. That could only be explained by magic or intentional poor design. At PTO rated eng RPM the hi idle will progress all the way to full fuel delivery according to the needs of the load. Some fuel advance curves are more aggressive and therefore hold tighter rpm control.

I have used a 24000 pto generator for many years and would have no other kind
my kubota l4200 (45hp) has no problem maintaining proper rpm regardless of load
if the tractor quits or doesn't start I have other tractors to choose from an many that could be borowed.
I don't want another engine to maintain

1HZ of frequency droop over 10KW of electrical load on a mechanical tractor governor is nothing short of amazing! What tractor make and model are you running?

It's a M-F GC2410 with about 250hrs. I was quite surprised with the lack of droop as well. The generator is a IMD AVR unit. These have meters for volts, amps and Hz. I verify the volts and Hz with a multimeter as well.

I have the same IMD 10 kw pto generator. I chose to go with the old style capacitor regulated, I thought it would be more reliable less complex.

I have since second guessed that decision, and your experience reinforces my hindsight.

I may call them, and see if I could change it over to avr.

I have the 50/25kw Winpower and it has worked well for me for 20+ years. Use it in the field with the welder and electric pressure washer (as well as the house and A/C).

Last year I made a gearbox setup from 2100 pto rpm to 540 on my JD F-935 front mower so I can run off of its 22 hp diesel engine. I use a Kill-A-Watt unit to adjust rpm for 60 Hz. output and the rest is automatic.

How's that generator do, since you're running it with less then 50% of the recommended PTO HP?

i guess as long as he's also using only 50% or less of the power rating he's fine.

There was a Winco 25kw PTO generator on the local CL...but since my 4400 has 30 PTO HP, I passed by. Now I wonder it that had been a mistake (no longer listed, but that doesn't always mean it was sold).

remember.. kw rating is what it's max output CAN be.. not what it always is.

as a general rule of thumb, you can get 1 kw of power from about 2hp of tractor pto.

that means if you have a 20hp pto tractor you can make about 10kw of power. it don't matter if you have a 50kw genny head.. you'll get 10kw out of it.

works the same way in reverse. you can run a 100 hp tractor on a 20kw head.. even thought he tractor could run a 50kw genny, it will run a 20kw genny.

in most all cases, fuel usage on a diesel will be based on load. ie, 2 more or less equally efficient tractor engine, one a 15hp model, one a 30hp model, both generating 5kw of power on a genny head.. are gonna use ABOUT thesame amount of fuel.

as was stated earlier.. pto rpm effects frequency .. etc.

What sound guy said, plus taking 15 kw out of a 25 kw genny may be more stable power than squeezing 15 out of a 15KW generator. Due to the heavier spinning mass, and the "fly wheel" effect.
