In the past, I always used the compressed air sprayer. However, when I recently sprayed the box blade, I used an HVLP, which I had gotten to spray some furniture, which I built for the grand kids. I thought, the HVLP worked good, with a lot less over-spray and mess. Also, no water to worry about and the air entering the gun is warm.

Edit: Maybe I should qualify that. It was a cheap and dirty, self contained Wagner, not a professional unit.

Re: What do you use to spray paint with?

I have an HVLP self contained unit from TP Tools and reg spray guns, I love the HVLP over conventional guns now.

I have two old Binks guns in fair to good condition that I use. Have considered buying an hvlp setup next time but don't know anything about them. I will be interested to see what others think about the hvlp's.

The one I used is a Wagner HVLP 2300.

You can get a nice job, don't need an air compressor and like I said, "there is less mess and over-spray". They are relatively inexpensive, even though, they are probably more $$, now.

I like the Binks Guns a lot . I was an industrial painter in the 90's and the Binks Guns were very reliable and sprayed very good with little error. I am thinking about going to airless later for getting things done around the ranch. It takes some practice to get good at spraying with an airless as you can get runs very easy. You have to spray fast but steady to avoid runs with airless but once you get the rhythm on using them they are as good as anything.

I use HVLP sprayer for applying finishes in my woodworking shop quite a bit and love the lack of overspray and reduction in paint usage but, Some things to keep in mind while shopping are:

- if you are buying a self contained turbine version find out how many stage turbine is in the unit and what coatings it can apply. Some of the cheaper units have a single or dual stage turbine that work for low viscosity finishes but do not develop enough air to spray heavier bodied finishes.

- If you don't spray a lot of items take a look at the conversion guns available. If you already have an air compressor and don't spray a lot they provide a cheap answer to getting into using HVLP. The conversion guns produce a little more overspray than the turbine version, but a lot less than a traditional spray gun.

I, also, have a an old Wagner Airless, which I used to spray the barn. It WILL APPLY paint! I believe, it was around 20 gallons for the barn. It is an old barn, which had never been painted, with a lot of new rough-cut restoration.

And, then again, sometimes a "rattle can" fits the bill.

I rebuilt my coal stove to have a larger ash pan, as it was a transition model, with only a small ash pan for wood burning. I repainted with the flat, high heat paint in a rattle can. Re-fabed ash pan not shown.

In my younger days I was a body man/painter and used Binks, Devilbiss, Sharpe, etc... In recent years I've tried the HVLP air guns and like them once I got past running the paint off everything with them. The airless guns are ok, but for me they don't give the depth and quality gloss and feel I like.

As I was trying to point out, I think, a lot of it depends on "what you are painting" and the finish, you feel you require. And, there is a gray area between what you are painting and what sprayer you use. Anything could be painted with any method ... results might be different.
