How important is 4WD on a duallie?

if fuel budget was so tight that the few extra drips from the laoder made a difference that I had to unhook it when not using it.. I'd either give up.. or i'd opt to miss a single dinner eating out one night.. that single dinner price would be more than my 'extra fuel needs' for the year.. ;)

all i know is i have been so glad of the 4wd when i have beeded it...like the time i would have been stuck in a field towing my horse trailer. Never would have a truck that isnt 4x4... with positraction

You could always do what the guy stuck with his horse trailer in the Viagra commercial does...unloads his horses and uses them to pull his truck out...

Unless you have true locking hubs, like the old Warn style, there is still a lot of rotating mass in the front end. And, most 2wd trucks do not run as agressive of tires up front; better mileage there too.

i wouldn't think running a 4wd truck in 2wd would drastically kill it's fuel economy over a 2wd truck.

it will be a lil heavier.. but in the real world at the end of the year.. what's that equal in fuel? a tank every multiple thousand miles?

my 2wd and 4wd have the same tires front and rear.. and as for the rotational mass... in oil.. I still don't see that as being a deal killer.

I'll skip eating out 1 night a year, and then i can use the $$ for the extra fuel my 4wd is gonna waste.. AND I won't get stuck. pulling my loaded gooseneck up a hill on a limerock road, and then stop at the top, in a turn and wet spot before pulling out into traffic. That spot I speak of is the frontage road leaving my farm and getting on the main road.. years past I did it with my 4wd dodge 1/2 ton and smaller trailer, having to make more laods.. or white knuckle it.. and 4wd was used every time I visit...

good trade to me.

I for one NEVER worry about my fuel economy in a 1 ton 4x4 truck. My old 1975 f350 got 8 MPG . My 2005 F350 gets an average of 14-15. Big improvement.

Yet, when im towing a 30 foot horse trailer or a flatbed trailer, i really dont care about MPG. I worry more about wheter i can get where i have to go.

For MPG worry thats for driving into town to catch a movie or go to work.

There is no comparison between a SRW and a Dually. For a number of reason. Stability, in one the other is you have two extra spare tires on the road.

I bought a 04 diesel 3500 SRW and then bought a 05 DRW diesel 3500. Same manufacture same equipment one year apart one dually one single and the difference was amazing on the dually.

Also I was on a long trip with a load and I pulled in for fuel did a tire check and had an inner tire flat. Wasn't a problem I drove to the tire store and was on my way. With a SRW I would be on the side of the road. YES, Yes, I know if it was the front tire I would be down also. But the fact is it was rear and never cause me to pull over on the freeway.

The best part of the stability was cornering on freeway ramps. The dually cornered beautifully. The SRW seemed tippy.
