5 gallon water bottles + bleach = Smoke???

i wonder if the fact that the bottles were capped,
then left with the bleach in for the drive makes
a difference here. that seems to be the only
change in your process from before.
that would have been straight bleach for
an extended period of time whereas they normally
never get exposed to that concentration of bleach with an
immediate rinse.

was there a temperature change during the drive?
around here, you can drive a couple miles and get 8-10
degrees change in temp, mostly due to elevation changes.

Odd...
Acid rain ? not if your pH is 8.4
More lime leaching out ? Yeah, but only if you have acidic water doing the leaching - Duhh, which would tend toward 7 (from 6 or lower, the acidic end of the scale).

Since you have been doing this for a few years already and - Ahh, I didn't ask this;
Do you LIVE there, or is it a vacation spot ?

If a vacation spot or hunting lodge that you don't visit often there are all sorts of possibilities.
Everything from work being done up stream during the week and quiet when you are there on week-ends, so you don't notice.
If you live there full time you would probably be aware of stuff like that.

I doubt the wisdom of bleach, but that is a whole 'nother topic.
Can't you get the stuff that bars and restaurants use for glassware ?
{Yeah, tip of my tongue - I used it for sterilizing equipment for home brew and wine making... As soon as I close this reply I'll remember it} some sulphite or other ???

Potassium sulphite ? maybe.

Dutch, nope, no temp change. You are right, capping them for 5 min or so was the only thing different.

Reg, we live here & have been fetching water from this spring for 5-6 years. The spring is at the bottom of Copper ridge, I only own part of the ridge...the lower 1/4th. It rises and saddles several times and above and behind the spring. It is mostly all thick steep woods until you get to the top where there are several houses, but even up there is no pasture to speak of, no cattle, but a few goats. The guy on top had to drill a well 700' deep which would be below me.

I'll see if I can pull up my GPS Topo so y'all can see how the land lays in relation to the spring.

Not to get off track here but, what are you raising in that pasture? Must be buffalo, the finned variety.

Very funny, but virtually everyone in North America is drinking water that has been through a few septic tanks........think about it:thumbsup:

I'm immune anyway...raised in New Orleans where the city got it's water from the sparkling clear Mississippi River:laughing: The joke back then was by the time it got to us it had been through 26 kidneys:licking:

might have been mentioned but missed it and it is a question.
Could the shaking of bleached have been the cause. No idea if it will midst up if shaken but possible.
