Guys, thanks for the info about sharpening the chainsaw. I will check out the links to get an idea how to get started. To date, I've always taken the saw to a shop to get it sharpened. However, that method won't work so well once I start regularly cutting firewood.

Do you have any recessed lighting in the ceiling...maybe insulation is too close to one or more of the cans...? Do you have access to the attic above...? If so take a look...just my first guess.
We don't have any recessed lighting in that area. We have a chandelier and a simple glass dome ceiling fixture on the circuit that seems to be causing the smell.

Regarding the electrical smell, could be a loose wire at switch or light?

Regarding the splitter, very nice! The advantage to a separate unit (not hooked to tractor) is being able to use the tractor to move the wood (on pallets after splitting as you are doing, but also to move the wood to the splitter if needed).

It should last years if the motor is maintained (gas treatment, oil changes, etc). I have always used the same oil in my lawnmower and small engines as what I use in my vehicles (5W30) but had a problem with 454 in 73 pickup having cam go flat due to current oils lacking additives for flat tappet lifters... Use the oil called for in the motor on the splitter.. keep the motor covered if outside and give the peppermint oil on cotton ball a try for keeping mice out of motor covers..

Stay safe and enjoy the new "toy"...

Sorry that was all that I could think of from building our house...I am not electrified..LOL...You have to be careful with that stuff ..one wrong move and you walk and talk with Jesus ..:) If it were me I would call the electrician you used to install it...but I agree ...don't use it until it is checked.

I get what might be a similar smell when entering our house after being outdoors. In our case it's the minute amount of ozone created by our Honeywell electronic air filter. Don't smell it during the summer months but during the damper winter months it's noticable.

Electrical Problem

We have noticed a very faint acrid "electrical" smell in our foyer on rare ocasions. Yesterday, after we had the foyer/front hallway ceiling lights turned on for a while, I noticed the smell again. We aired out the foyer/hallway then turned on the lights later in the day as a test. Sure enough, the smell came back.

There's something wrong with the electrical wiring or components for the foyer lighting. Do you guys know of a way to test the wiring for this sort of problem? I suspect some wiring insulation has been compromised but that's just a guess. Our "smell" test is very subjective. I would like a more objective and reproducible test so that when we are done re-wiring I can be confident that we've fixed the real problem.

We are trying to decide whether to call the electrician or handle the issue ourselves. Obviously we don't want to use the foyer lights until we've resolved the problem.
Pull the switches and fixtures and look! There is nothing you can do from just looking at the walls. you need to get in there. Im sure you know its just solid wireing to the switch and lights then on to whatever. If it only does it when lights are on it has to be coming from the fixture itself as everywhere else has power untill its switched on at the switch. Do you have a reostat type switch, maybe its burning up?

This seems like it might be good for the chain saw sharpening challenged:

PowerSharp Sharpens On The Saw, On The Job, In Seconds. - YouTube

Has anyone had any experience with it?

But If this is the same thing they sell at lowes and showed on this old house, you have to buy a special bar and chain that costs like $100. Plus they do not sell them for "real" sized chainsaws. I think the bars only go to 18"s and for the larger Husky and Stihl saws like i have there is no application made. Plus a round file is like $3 and will last about 5-10 sharpenings, and a chain will last for years if taken care of even cutting cords of wood a year.

I wish I could get a chain to last me. I usually only cut down deadwood and sometimes the center is hard as rock. I wanted to buy a Stihl carbide tooth chain, but they only sold it somewhat reasonably priced in a big roll. It would take a big group of guys or a business to be able to use that much. I keep about 6 chains of each size ready to go. As they get dull, I put them in a brown bag and take them in to be sharpened.

The foyer and hallway have two light fixtures that are on the same circuit. You can see both fixtures in the picture. There are two 3-way switches, one at each end of the hallway. I smell the electrical odor close to the front door. One of the 3-way switches is by the front door.

Today my wife bought a replacement 3-way switch. This weekend I may replace the switch and see if that helps. That would be a simple fix. If that doesn't work, we may have to rewire the entire leg of the circuit that contains the two lights and two switches. Re-running wires the area by the front door switch will not be much fun; there are 4 switches by the front door, 3 of which are 3-way switches with lots of wires.
