I'm looking at a 336D that has a motor with unknown problems. What is known is that the radiator is dry, it won't turn over (but is not locked solid, the crank moves a bit with starter). The tractor is relatively low hours, 850, and appears to be in pretty good shape other than motor.

Could be blown head gasket, cyls full of water...bent rods...cracked block...or could be the starter is just bad. It's a pig in a poke but with a lot of implements including hoe, loader etc., and the owner is looking for an offer. He states that he "thinks" the tractor was overheated once. I do my own mechanics and could do repairs up to a rebuild but i'm thinking the best option would be to try to tack down a running or rebuilt engine and base my offer on that worst case scenario.

I can do limited inspection, possibly including pulling injectors. Doesn't appear to be any way of getting to the front crank nut without pulling radiator, probably not an option for a pre buy. It rarely gets cold enough to freeze/crack blocks here but it does happen occasionally. Would a crack be readily apparent? Do these engines have freeze plugs. Any ideas on things to check? Does anyone know a source for used engines...are they hard to find....rebuild units anywhere?

I'm willing to take a chance on condition of the rest of the unit. Would appreciate you guys thoughts on this. Any idea of what a frame mount backhoe (yanmar brand) would be worth on the open market? I don't really need one and it might help reduce cost to buy the pkg and sell the hoe.

Thanks,

Chuck

The 336D is a really nice tractor. It used the Yanmar 3T84A-N engine. The hours could be 1850 too - I beleive that model has a 3 digit hour meter. If you suspect water in there I would try to tear the top open or atleast remove the compression using the comp release and see if you can turn the engine with a long ratchet on the crank nut. Try Hoyes - you can look up the rebuild kits pricing and I believe there are a few sites around that sell engines - you just need to find that engine though... I have never used these guys for used parts but I had them saved in my notebook under just in case: wkytp.com
southern-global.com

Where are you located? The backhoe is worth a few bucks...I know I for one would be interested...

I would try and fix it first if it turns out to be something simple like a head gasket and all you have to do is re-ring it that would be a cheap repair.

With that said:

I would not trust the rods not being bent if its got water in any of the cyls have them checked for straightness at a minimum if the bend is not obvious dont trust your eyes get a pro to look everything over.

I cannot speak for all years but my 336d has 1575 hours on it so my meter will register to 9999 hours.
The radiator is prone to clogging if mowing occurs in heavy seedy stuff. Overheating is a possiblity.

This is sounding encouraging, I appreciate the help. Can you tell me where the compression release is? I assume this holds open the valves? I've got to admit, I'm impressed with the general looks and build of the tractor, and it's awakened my desire to make stuff run.

What, other than head warpage and gasket blowing, effect would overheat have on the motor?

I'm going to take a breaker bar over and see if I can turn the engine. Anyone know what size socket fits the front crank nut? If it isn't locked I'll most likely take a chance and buy it. The backhoe is a lightly used Yanmar brand, it does not mount on the 3 point though it does use an external pto pump. Tractor and hoe are located in Tx. I'd appreciate it if anyone has a realistic idea of what the hoe is worth, that'll give me some nego room. I truly don't need it.

Chuck

Once again, thanks for the help and keep the ideas comin.

If it's the same guy I emailed back and forth, he said it threw a rod. This guy was in Waco, TX.

I'd hate for it to be the same guy simply changing his story in order to dump the tractor on someone unable to tell the difference.

You may be hard pressed to find a replacement engine for even a remotely decent price, if at all. Used parts for these tend to run 50-80% of new price and the new prices are crazy high. Don't mean to pee on your parade, I know how much I tend to trick myself into thinking things aren't that bad when I want something bad enough, only to learn an expensive lesson.

On a side note, I have a 336D and it is a nice tractor. It'd be nice to have another 336D owner in here, as we're pretty underrepresented :). I'd prefer to not see any posts from people saying they were taken for a ride, though.

Car Doc,

The backhoe is on its way, air freight collect. Seriously, after doing some parts looking and thinking on it a bit, I've decided to give this tractor a pass. There are just too many good deals on later model tractors to undertake a project of unknown magnitude.

I want to thank everyone for taking the time to advise me.

Thanks,

Chuck

If you are not going to grab it maybe you could post information in case someone else is interested.

Ditto on this.

You also never mentioned what he was willing to take for it. Its tough to say if something is worth it without being able to do the math.
