Title pretty much covers it. That "favorite rod" thread got me wanting to get better with 6011.

I was butt welding some 1/4" scrap using 1/8" 6011 at 100a and wasn't getting penetration to the back. I left a gap of about 1/8". It was DCEP. Judging by the penetration I got, I figure if I V groove it about 1/8 deep, it would get full penetration. Oh, no backer. I used other scrap to space it off the table.

hmm.. 1/4" material, 1/8 6011 rod ( not 6010? ) adn 100a

I think you should have been able to get full penetration without v grooving, whether it needed it or not.. etc.

had you said 6013, i'd have agreed completely.. a bit of a shallower weld..

Maybe I was traveling too fast and not allow the puddle to penetrate. I dunno. I'll take some pics.

for dc, 6010 works better then 6011, and it welds basicaly the same, just a bit less spatter.

The camera on my phone sux.. none of the pictures turned out. It's raining, so the good camera isn't going out here. I welded some more with 1/8" 6010 at 85a and 1/8" 7014 at 130a with similar results though.

The 6010 runs smoother than the 6011 but it's harder to keep an arc going.

Since you have an Everlast PowerArc 200, have you tried the 6010 port for both the 6010 and 6011 tests?

It is supposed to help but since I run only 6011 it is hard to compare.

I do when I want 100% penetration!
Depends on what level you want to take your welding / fabrication skills to. You'll need to figure out what angle of bevel, land, (root face), and gap works best for you. Two double bevel plates are easier to get full penetration than two single bevel plates.

I have the newer version that doesn't have a separate 6010 port. The 6010 capability is supposed to be built into the standard port now.

Well that's good to know. Maybe (just maybe) it isn't all my fault then. I'll try beveling a few pieces and see how it goes.

Joint prep, will make or break you! Even the best weldors in the world can only do so much with bad joint prep. ;)
