One last contribution to the "drill press modification" hijack...

I've attached a picture of the speed reduction mechanism on this bigger drill press that I bought. Some of you may be able to poach ideas from it to adjust your own. I don't know if the motor pulley can be turned upside down like this on the smaller drill presses.

The first picture includes a full shot of the center idler pulley and the off-set pin that allows it to move in relation to the other pulleys. The second picture is the assembled drive mechanism.

What you have there is the exact concept my friend at the coffee shop in town was describing to me when I talked up the modification I'm planning for my DP.:thumbsup: Certainly simplifies it. My remaining concern is the puny "sewing machine " belt on mine. I'll have to see about changing that out somehow.

I'll be up against the same thing. Changing out the pulleys should not be bad. I just wish they were cheap. I am going to look for a new (used) machine first.

Since I have two of these DPs, I see no need for retaining the multi-speeds feature on the one I'm doing the mods to. Is there some way I can stay with the thin belt off the motor to the idler and then go bigger to the spindle from there without going all "Rube Goldberg" with it? Help!:confused2:

C'mon man! The belt off the motor will still have to be replaced because it will be too long. It should be an easy pulley to replace. Send the sewing machine belt to Singer.

After all this talk about drill press speeds, i descided i should go out and check mine. I couldnt remember what speed ranges my old Delta DP had, all i know is it does a great job drilling. I was surprised at the range i can get....

I looked at my sewing machine belted Craftsman yesterday. The slowest of the 8 speeds is 380 and the largest bit on the guide plaque is 9/16" in cast or medium carbon steel. Kind of a wussie machine to have come out of a machine shop.

I guess it depends on what else they had in the machine shop. I'm tempted to keep my little drill press for the small jobs and for my sanding drums. Then I won't have to adjust my speed as much on the bigger drill press.

Regarding the not being able to click back, try clicking a blank area on the webpage to go back. I'm not sure if this will work or not, but I like to use the backspace button to go back, and in order to do that, I have to click a blank area on the webpage; if I've clicked in the reply box or something, it'll think that the backspace command is for what I was typing. Maybe it's a similar case for the button.
