Tractors with 84" MMM on a compact?

But it sure makes fast work of a 15 acre lawn

Maybe, but not as bad as my 90" rear finish mower I'm using now. 72" MM mowers are very common. 84" is only 6" bigger on each side.

Why would a mid PTO have any less power for an 84" mower than a rear PTO for an 84" mower?

The MMM has a smaller gearbox. You couldn't run as big of a snowblower off a mid PTO vs rear for a reason. I think you would be better suited with something like this.

Woods Equipment: Product Details

That way you have plenty of mower. A MMM is not well suited for 15 acres.

I already have large mowers like that for cutting some of my 25+ acre customers
Problem is I have 2 customers with 12-15 acres of grass, not fields. They want it cut like a lawn, so my bush hog wouldn't work.
I would like to pick up a smaller compact in the 40-50HP range. I already have a 90" rear finish mower, but don't like cutting next to the curvy steams that go thru the properties. I tend to watch the mower to get a close cut and not watch the tires enough. The MMM is safer because I can watch the edge of the stream and get a very close cut.

My municipality has a NH with an 84" MMM and the guys that run it like it.
I will probably end up in a used L-3940 w/ 72" MMM if I can't find one.

Mid-Mount-Mower

The mower underneath the tractor is a mid mount mower and the one behind is a rear/3ph (3 point hitch) mower.

Minor correction...the implement on the back is a Rotary Cutter (used for rough cutting and field mowing)...frequently called a Bush (or Brush) Hog.

84" is a big mower...had one (a Rear Finishing Mower (RFM)).
Few things I did not like about it:
1) They do scalp easily unless your lawn is pretty flat.
2) They can span minor dips and depressions, leaving a ragged looking cut.
3) Due the size, I actually had to do more trim work...that size is a bit unwieldy.

I would get a ZTR. No sense in getting another compact with only one purpose. You'll mow at twice the speed with half the deck size as a compact as well.

Agree on the speed, but the compact will have a dozen different duties...mowing, snow, spreading wood chipper, york rake, back blade....you name it.

Totally agree on the Zero turn being faster-hence the 84" deck. Just can't do much else with a ZTR other than mow. The compact will get used year round. Plus I will mow in comfort in the cab with AC & radio in the compact.

Can't disagree with that. Especially being inside through the heat. I would stick to 72" mower though. 84" would be too big for me.

Is it essential it be a mid-mount mower?

No, just preferred. I have been doing it with a smaller MMM and I like the way I can mow along steep hillsides and streams and being able to watch the deck for a close cut and the tires so I don't go *** over teacups into a death roll.

Woods and a few other implement companies market gang mowers such as that shown in this link:
http://www.woodsequipment.com/uploadedFiles/Products/literature/TBW Full Line.pdf

That would make short work of those 12-15 acres.
My question for you is; is the money you make off those contracts enough to justify the cost new or even used equipment?

I have a 90" rear finish mower but I can't keep an eye on the tires enough for my satisfaction.
The money I make off of the mowing alone? No, but the other jobs it will do for customers, yes.
