Ford Industrial Tractor Identification

Rick, what do you think about my conclusion that I have a 420?

If the tractor has a singe drop steering box (one pitman arm) and a power steering cylinder with integral valving mounted parallel to the engine crankshaft along the LH side, it is most likely a 420.

Actually, only on some field trials. Pre-production.

that is probably right i have only seen the one 4000 it was a 74-75 model and had a factory altenator and wiring harness and was a one owner low hour tractor and completely orginal

1974 4000's had altenators

I'm not even close to buying into all '74 4000's having alternators. They would have to have oilpump driven tachs that worked CCW, and I'm not buying that, either. If a significant number of Thousand series tractors left the factory with alternators, the parts catalog would indicate that. The only references to alternators in the Thousand series parts catalogs is for a Mexican-built 5000 and all 7000's. The 7000's tach drove off the injection pump, so the alternator installation became simpler. Hard to do with a CAV rotary style pump.

Having knowledge of one or a few pre-production units (which I won't argue with) is a long way from validating the statement that "1974 4000's had altenators".

thats why i restated it in a better way i have seen one but not many of them it could have been a test ford was running but i know its factory and the tach does drive off the cam

perhaps a dealer conversion?

Could be, but kind of expensive as you've pointed out in the past, proofmeters and all.

Rick B and Whodat are both kind of right. To clarify, a very small number of customer owned tractors were converted to alternators in 1972 for research purposes. They must have liked them as none were ever converted back to generators and you know the rest of the story.
