I've always wondered where that chain bar oil gets off to when I cut wood; 'specially now that the price is so high.

O gawd, now they will wanna take our chain saws away from us

There are already several wood harvesting areas that specify the use of cooking oil or bio-degradable oil as bar oil...

Second is in herbicide applications. There are Oil based herbicides, Garlon and all its incarnates to mention one. That it labled for mixture with deisel fuel. In these applications when foliar applied it will cut the waxy cuticle and allow penetration of the herbicide to work more effectivly, think saw palmetto or wax myrtle or bay berry, gal berry etc. OR it is used in a basal injection mix. Which is a highly concentrated mix of garlon and deisel, sprayed with a stream nozzel directly onto the bark of the tree desired to be killed. The deisel carries it into the cambium of the tree for it to work.

I used to work with the GFC in FLA years ago. One of the things we were doing back then was killing non native plants. These plants were and are a huge problem in South Florida. We would put plant killer in sprayers that were mostly diesel, cut the plant or tree around its base and then spray with the poison.

This was done at the direction of state biologist in the Everglades and in protected areas.

The Melaleuca trees could only be killed by poison. If you burned them they would spit seeds. If you cut them down the stump would sprout and if the trunk was left on the ground it too would sprout. This weed tree was introduced to suck up the ground water and drain the swamps. I have seen newsreels from the 20/30's showing box loads of the Melaleuca seeds being tossed out of airplanes.

I have not used an indoor bug killer in years but I do remember when the carrier was diesel. Lordy but that stuff stunk up the house.

Dan

I accidentally poured diesel on kudzu several years ago and it definitely didn't come close to killing it.

Why not wipe the equipment with a rag with diesel or oil. Seems you would not have over spray and it would go were you want it. I have done this and have not had any issues with oil on the ground. And I don't breathe the spray

I can tell you for a fact, especially in humid areas, diesel fuel is an extremely poor rust preventative. Why not just use a legal method utilizing products that actually were designed for rust prevention and are vastly superior in preventing rust and corrosion?

I don't understand that. Diesel is oily. Oil(y) protects metal from rusting. It may not be the absolute best rust preventative, but should do a good job & may be the cheapest, is readily available & pretty easy to apply.

Well, oil is lighter than water. Unfortunately diesel fuel washes away rather easily but, with it's hydrophobic characteristics, would actually trap humidity under the fuel and cause corrosion faster. Look it up, it's a fact. Science has progressed a bit since the early 1900's and there are hundreds, if not thousands, of methods of preserving metal that would be far superior to illegally and foolishly dousing diesel fuel on outdoor items. My cousin in the Navy says they use Fluid Film by the drum for rust and corrosion protection. It's used by thousands of tractor and equipment owners as well.

There, there is one simple spray method that 1) actually works 2) is not illegal and 3) actually protects rather than trapping moisture against bare metal. Everybody can pitch in with a working method and we can have a thousand better ideas in no time. :)

Looks like most people have had very good success at preserving their equipment so it can run longer with a fine spray of diesel. I think the multitute of experienced user posts proves that.

I'm more worried about the other things sprayed or squirted in the environment such as liquid wrench, or wd-40, or hair spray, or paint, or bug killer, or hornet spray, or mosquito killer, or pesticides, or herbicides, or fungicides, or ... yeh, you get the picture.

A couple of wacko poster(s) ( probably one, with multiple screen names) on this site definetly micro-focus and ignore the big picture

You'd be far better off, since you obviously have an internet connection, actually doing a little research. Science says that said equipment would have survived just as well, very likely better, if not illegally coated with a fuel. The multitude of posts that agree with something clearly wrong tells me something quite different. As I said, DO NOT believe me. You have an internet connection. Do some searches on preserving equipment by spraying or coating it with diesel fuel. When I know for a fact I'm right, with science backing me up, I don't budge an inch. To be blunt, it's a very poor idea. Sort of along the lines of physicians back in that time bleeding people to try to cure them. That wasn't such a good idea either. ;)

Honestly. Do you have nothing better to do than try to act superior on the net?
Did you really not get a single thing from my last post before you try to be pompus? Good greef! Everything humans do is "bad" for the environment.

Don't think for a second you are so superior that you can pick and chose right from wrong- no way pal!!

If you are so concerned for the environment and you are so up to date on what is "legal" then go spend your time on an environmental site., or a legal site. If you really care ( and I know you really don't) go make a difference where your thousands of posting hours could make a difference. If you are so freaked out about diesel, why are you always on a tractor site????

Give me a break!
