Roll pin removal---Any advice or tricks

one thing to watch out for, (and I dont know all the ingredients in PB Blaster) is anything with tricloroethylene or anything like that in it.. as it can produce some pretty poison gas's when heated. do it outside. I know brake fluid is a big no no.. I think it produces phosgene gas which can really mess you up.

the pb will burn off.. no big deal. I generally will heat a part then quench with pb.

keep in mind bearings or seals in the area if you are heating.

If you can apply the heat to the pin as if you are trying to weld it, it will heat up faster than the larger part that it is in. Then it will actually stretch some since that is the easier way for it to expand than going outward against the cooler metal (relatively speaking). If you have excess sticking out on both ends hit the cooler end to drive flush breaking the rust holding it in place. Works great for tube type locating pins like used on bell housings, just grab with a pair of pliers and pull out.

Best way I've found is a roll pin punch and a palm nailer. Please no Flames!!

Let me make sure I understand you. I have one part with a heavy steel "hub" that is pinned to a shaft with a 3/8" solid pin. You are saying it's better to heat the pin than the hub? I never excelled in chemistry or physics! How does heating the pin affect its shape. I asume heating the hub would cause it to expand, thus enlarging the hole.

If you heat the pin quickly it will try to expand but it cannot because it is stuck in the hole so it it only stretches lengthwise. Then when it cools it contracts in all directions which makes it smaller than the holes - loosening it. The trick is to cool it quickly after you heat it, like with water or the PB spray mentioned before. Whether its a pin, bolt, or nut I usually heat and cool it three times before I try to force it out - easy eh?

I was thinking just as you are thinking about heating the nut to make it expand, except I was heating a hub trying to get the bearing race out. I heated and heated and beat the race and finally gave up. Then father-in-law came over who has a few/many years in auto mechanic. He started heating the race and I told him that does not make sense, he kept heating until it was almost cherry hot. He told me to give it a wack. Lo and behold it started coming out. He hit it with more heat, then I hit it with big hammer again. Not too long later it was out, never heating the hub directly. I told him it does not make sense but I will do it that way next time.

Never had to use heat on roll pins, just punch and PB.

Good luck

Get it hot enough and it might run out.:D:D

I sometimes use an air chisel with a punch end it it .Pushes them right out. badly.Rusted roll pins usually break anyway and come out in peices
