Busted my arse! I freaking poured 5 gallons on that plant!! Geez, how dense can you be?! Does everyone have to explain jokes to you? Guess what, it killed everything, but the kudzu, within a 5' circle...for about a month. After a month everything grew back no problem. Diesel fuel doesn't even work well at all for a weed killer! No wonder this simple issue is above you.

WOW he admitted to doing an illegal act to which he has been preaching to the rest of the site not to do...........

incredible!

That's a good point/ question for Dargo: With the incredible seriousness according to you of diesel on the ground & then into ground water, either you really screwed up bad or you decided to do your own illegal experiment. Which is it?

Did your momma have any kids that lived? Get it? It's a joke! All I'm trying to do, scratch that, tried to do, was to get SOMEONE to actually think for themselves and actually do some research. You will find NO reliable research of any type stating that diesel fuel is even remotely good for preserving old equipment. All I hear is old wives tales and Lemmings, I don't hear but 1 person, tungularafishcamp, even begin to do any sort of research or experiment. What happened to common sense on this site? Some guys used to practically do term papers either proving or disproving their point. Now it's just follow old wive's tales?

So if you actually do it, and it works, isn't that research? You're asking people to research something they already know works, that makes no sense. Also, doing something unconventional is the opposite of being a lemming.

This!!!

It works, ive seen it work. What more do you need?

Yes Fluid Film works (ive used that too) but its also $49/Gal. For a quick washdown of a fert spreader its way overkill and honestly it might not work as well due to its thick sticky texture. Diesel, by being thin and not lasting as long, means the fert spreader is good to go the next time its needed without requiring any cleaning before use. The diesel "penetrates" the surface without any buildup of sticky residue.

The much talked about WD40 is essentially 90% petroleum distillate... Not much different that diesel IMHO.

SOME over educated idiots think they are the only intelligent people because they have a piece of paper from some Ivy League Monument to Education, and discount what people can and do learn by just living life.

Some of the stupidest people I have known in my life are some the OVER EDUCATED ones, they are so busy being snooty they do not see the real world

I wonder how so many things have been accomplished all these years prior to the proliferation of all the Ivy Leaguer's

A scan on this thread finds the following posts, in favor of using diesel (in some form) to prevent rust:

By timswi: "That will work to a degree, I used to spray used motor oil under my '70's pickups to mitigate rust."

By LD1: "The farmer down the road uses diesel as well. His equipment always looked good. Even the older tractors."

By CTPhil: "I have my local garage spray the underside of my truck in the fall."

By flusher: "I spray the seed cups in my grain drill with diesel every few months. Diesel is waxy and doesn't evaporate rapidly like gasoline."

By D7E: "Pretty standard thing to do anywhere i've lived."

By Scooby074: "It works. I know a farmer that used to spray diesel on his old disk to keep the rust down. And the spreaders get a spray with diesel after being washed out."

By Bear Foot Farm: "A fine MIST will cover a large area with a small quantity, and it stays on the equipment a long time"

By daman1: "I do the same thing but cut it with some clean 20w ND oil, gives a little "thicker" oil coating."

By 90cummins: "Living in the rust belt of Western Mass I have found that WD-40 or its generic equilivant from Wal-Mart and white lithium grease in an aerosol can works well. I spray wd40 on the parts to be protected then the white grease to seal it. The WD-40 penetrates into the cracks and when the white grease is applied it is thinned and wicked into the rust, flaking paint or parting lines of the parts or sheet metal."

By Fixemall: "One cup of diesel will coat a 7' tiller, two bush hogs and a finish mower if applied with an automotive paint gun."

By Mark Page: "My Grandfather did the same thing only he used waste oil. He had a very old drop spreader that only had minimal rust on it. It wasn't 'til I was much older that I understood why."

By Bota4me: "Mix waste oil with diesel, 50/50 then spray on for corrosion resistance. Works great!"

By MikeD74T: "When I worked as a cement finisher we brushed diesel fuel onto the rim, blades, & elevator of our power trowels after each job. Prevented rust and concrete accumulation. I've taken apart 50 year old fasteners that were occasionally sprayed with DF, it will go into places where water won't."

By Verticaltrx: "'Mix waste oil with diesel, 50/50 then spray on for corrosion resistance. Works great!' That is what I use, but it is more like 70% diesel 30% used oil. I put the mix in a little spray bottle with a fine mist setting. Almost zero gets on the ground (actually the concrete floor of my shop,) and we're talking milliliters here. I generally only use this on things that corrode badly like fertilizer spreaders."

I'm sorry but I refuse to believe that all of these folks are wrong.

I accidentally poured diesel on kudzu several years ago and it definitely didn't come close to killing it.

Add some plant killer next time. :D I forget the name of the plant killer we were using but it is likely banned now but it did work. Not sure if anything works on Kudzu.

I passed through the area I used to live and work a decade or so back and I was surprised at how much work had been done to remove the trees. I would be really surprised if they can ever get rid of the Brazilian Pepper plants.

Later,
Dan

Sorry, I quit reading after your very first supposed example (which is NOT research BTW). Your first quote says motor oil was used. FYI THERE IS A VERY BIG DIFFERENCE BETWEEN MOTOR OIL AND DIESEL FUEL!!! Done.

Proof in point; doing NOTHING would have resulted in the same end result. Still, and I feel like I'm trying to teach a mouse to play a piano, not one single person has provided ANY documented (sorry, there is a reason the word "hearsay" is disallowed in debates) evidence of ANY sort that spraying, and wasting, diesel fuel on equipment does anything helpful! If you have documented proof, I'll gladly entertain it. Otherwise, this whole subject is nothing but pure bravo sierra with zero proven positive results.
