We usually hunt with dogs, biggest on are place caught was 450lbs(heads on wall) but as for pistols I carry a Hi-Point 45 you can get these pistols new around $250 I have had mine for 4yrs and it has never let me down,I bought it so I wasnt worried about caring if it gets a scratch on it.

They are becoming somewhat of a problem in southern Kentucky. My son's neighbor killed one this fall that weighed over 300 lbs. They are very destructive. Here is a link to feral pig hunting in Texas.

Looks a lot more effective than the junk they show on American Hoggers, Lady Hoggers etc.

I agree on the r**** where practical--in fact, I bought a .45-70 specifically for hogs. Nothin' says lovin' like 300 grains of solid copper at 2000 FPS. I saw the OP's comment about "walking up on" a hog, though, and read it as him being less concerned when he's on the tractor and more when he's out walking his land. A r**** would definitely be better, but may not be practical for dismounted carry. As to caliber, .357 Magnum is the bare minimum with which I'd be comfortable, and then only with hard-cast loads. .45 ACP (my round of choice for social work and target shooting) is right out--I'm just not sure it'll penetrate the shield, and anything from the front is liable to slide right up the skull, given the angles. .44 Magnum is perfect here.

I definitely agree about the training and practice. I've been to a couple of shooting schools, and I am amazed at how perishable pistol skills are, especially against moving targets. Somehow, r**** skills seem to stick around a lot longer.

They are not worth eating, but they don't make bad pet food.

you can never get rid of the wild hogs.the only thing you can do is trapp an kill them.or hunt early morning an just before dark.an becareful they can really tear you up.

A 30-06 with an adjustable power scope might work well. If you are a good shot, you could kill them from 1000 yards away.

Speak for yourself. Best BBQ I've ever made has been on feral hog meat.

This topic has been discussed here before. It was here that I had heard about someone in TX that captures the hog and then sells them to a company that processes the meat. I figured the guy was making close to a Million a year from was being said.
