35 years & no rot? No concrete then I assume...that's what kills any post eventually.

I don't think you will replicate that stat with the "new" treated posts....I think they just dip them in Green Tea:laughing:.

I'm not sure that concrete is a killer. Maybe if it's overdone. I've heard to make sure there is drainage at the bottom, not encased in concrete. I pulled up some posts that I had set in concrete 7-8 years ago. The concrete stuck to it but when I busted it off, the posts looked new. Of course that's not 35 years either. OTOH, I'm sure that I won't last 35 years anyway.

I agree that some of the pressure treating today is very poor, thank big brother. You will notice that some PT items are marked "not for ground contact"....:confused2:

I think you have to be a careful shopper and make sure that the posts are properly treated for the intended use. Probably a farm supply place will have better treated posts than a hardware store or Wallymart:(

Soundguy,

Thanks for the reminder. Corners!

I plan to use round 6' posts on the corners of the PERMENANT Fencing, and instead of concrete, I will do 45 degree braces (I think).

For the temp fence, I will use tent stakes and tiedowns on the electric corner posts.

on my temp fencing I think I used 6-8 x 8 and no crete ,i DID use H or angle braces. In real sandy soil where the posts want to lift under hi-ten wire tension, I will drive in 2 tpost at rear angle of post and use #10 brace wire and make a holding loop, adding a staple to the post.

all can be pulled / dug out easy.. is solid.. and no crete.

good luck

Just the opposite for me. All my 4x4 post pretty much snapped like tooth picks back in the huge snow ans ice storms here in 2008/2009. Since then i have replaced all the 4x4 with treated 6x6, and ALL are in concrete 3' deep. I mounded the concrete so i dont worry about rotting. I had to remove all my old 4x4 posts, which were also concreted, and there was NO rot. They simply snapped due to tonnage weight of 120" of snow on them.

I went shopping today!

At the local hardare I bought 60 16 foot poplar fence boards, 38 1/2 rnd posts, a 12' gate, an 8" round post for the gate, and four 6-7" round posts for corners. They will deliver Thursday morningI believe.

At TSC I bought 22 fiberglass step-in posts, 1200' of electrobraid, a 9" auger, new teeth for my neighbor's 12" auger, a 3 mile solar battery/charger and misc stuff like grounding rod, etc.

I can't seem to scan it in landscape, it keep coming out sideways, but the attachment is the rough plan. Approx 296' of wooden 3 board with a 12' gate (308' of permanent fence) and approx 548' of Electro braid temporary fence.

Most of the grass will be inside this area, there will be a couple spots of grass outside the fence.

I hope to start working for real this weekend, maybe do some small stuff Thursday and Friday.

Who's coming to help? :D

Be well,
David

From your drawing it looks like ALL you'll have is corner posts. I've never seen a fence ramble and wander so much. Looks like you have a unique landscape. I bet it's pretty.

It is (or will be) Pretty. If I could take an aerial photo it would make more sense.

Keep in mind this "TEMPORARY" fencing. The wood is "Permanent".

What I am trying to do is enclose the GRASS I currently have, but NOT enclose the areas full of freshly ground up trees and stumps, and the un-ground up stumps, etc.

This is really just the parts the loggers did not log, the ol over grown garden and a clearing around some old dying fruit trees, and where the Walnut trees were.

I am doing this to save on bill I keep paying to have our Horses boarded.

I want them HERE NOW, while I take until next summer (or longer) to finish getting the other 4 acres of pasture in.

I hope tha makes more sense.

Eventually the wood fence will run along the driveway and the fire/access road, and I will have electric fence inside the tree line. Then it will look MUCH more typical pasture, somewhat rectangular even.

I hope that helps.

Be well,
David

David, depending on what vegetation will be inside your fence besides pasture grass, you may want to check on what is considered poisonous to horses. I'm no expert, I always rely on my daughters who are. But I think walnut maybe poisonous to horses.
