Electrical test meters,,,got one ?

its so slow now... i dont do much of ANY work :laughing:. but i do have 3 new 3500-3800 sf customs that i just signed up...maybe things are finally turning around??

What is bad for someone like yourself being a local in Idaho is that often government jobs help outsiders more than locals. One of my last jobs was northwest of Idaho Falls, they paid me to travel from southern New Mexico up there to perform some repairs.

Never had one living in the city, but was one of the first things I bought when moving to a rural area. Between the well and a few other projects this has been a life saver.

I have four meters and enjoy the learning. One of the first tools I bought my son was a meter and showed him how to use it. I am still learning and enjoy the dialog in the Forum.

Well the Simpson 260 served me well for years. It would work on firealarm systems and my $300.00 fluke couldn't do it. I do like the hrz setting on the Flukes for the adjusting of Gen-sets and checking a lot of other problems..

I remember using the Simpson 260 and Triplett 730 back in the 70's and they were good for tuning as watching the needle move was more intiutive. Now I don't have anything that requires tuning though so not much of a need anymore.

One of my meters is a Simpson model #260. I have owned it many years and recently it quit working. I have changed the battery and checked fuses but no luck. Love this unit but now it doesn't work. Any ideas?

First and obvious thing: If you can't get ANY readings at all, have you verified your leads are working?? It's possible one of the leads could have a frayed connection where it solders to the jack, or the test probe. If you are able to get ANY sort of readings, then the leads are obviously ok. Which leads to a likely defective component on the board inside it, or possibly the meter movement could have gone bad. Only way to tell that is to open it up and start checking things with another meter.

Hadn't seen it here . . .just an FYI for the casual user.
Beware of the $5.00 analog meters around digital control circuits.
The meter's internal resistance is rated at 5000 ohms per volt.
When doing resistance readings, enough current will flow from the meter to damage digital circuits. I won't buy a meter rated at less than 20000 ohms
per volt. Worked electronics for the last 45 years and seen a lot of people that should have known better do stupid things with meters . . .such as measure -21000 volts on a high power r.f. transmitter with a common meter. It arced from where the banana plug went in the meter to his leg.

I didn't want to get into testing anything other then our tractors.

Just makes it more confusing for some and I'd really feel bad if somebody got hurt with higher voltages.
