The other morning my wife finds a pit bull a sleep on the porch. Yells at him to get home. I stop by the one of the neighbors a couple miles away and describe the dog knowing he has these type dogs ... he says shoot the S.O.B.

Not really wanting to ... the next day he's back. Real friendly dog so I load him up in the truck and take him over to that neighbor ... who says I told you to shoot the S.O.B. ...I explain I am not going to take care of his dirty work and if he wants to shoot the S.O.B that he should.

Well the S.O.B is back this morning ... this time sleeping in the open hay barn a few feet from the chicken pen !!! I fired a couple shots in the air and away he went. BUT I'm betting he's coming back and I'm betting its going to be a problem.

Thoughts .....

Animal control?

Call the non-emergency Sheriff line, explain the "shoot my dog, on your property" conversation.

If your county/municipality has an animal shelter, call the warden.

Otherwise, you're going to have to shoot the . . .

Boy...a tough call...

I guess I'd call your county animal control and let them handle it...but you know that's likely to be a death sentence for the dog.
You, adopting the dog...out of the question? That's also a tough one...Pitbulls can be great dogs, but they are very territorial and protective. That has good points and bad points as I'm sure you know.

Or, you can continue taking the dog for a ride back to his irresponsible owner every morning....

I'm glad I'm not in your shoes in this one...I'm not sure what I'd do (but I'd probably lean toward adopting the dog).

Good luck!!

County Sheriff or Animal Control?

Next time the neighbor tells you to "shoot the s.o.b." I'd be inclined to respond with "I'm not going to shoot the s.o.b. And I'm not shooting your dog, either."

That's a tuff one. First choice - I'd call the county people responsible for animal rescue. I wouldn't tell them where the owner lived either. The dog is probably looking for a decent home.
Second choice - If you don't have that service, then I would dust it with my 223 and dig a hole with my back hoe. At that point you have to consider it a pest.

I always hate being one of the first to respond to this kind of question.

A old man once told me he got rid of a dog like that by taking scrapings from a tobacco pipe's bowl and rubbing it on his nose. The dog lost his sense of smell for several days. He said they don't come back for a repeat performance as smell is everything to a dog. Personally, I'd have no problem shooting a pit bull . . period. Their record is against them. Pit owners say "My dog won't do that . . . until they do". My ex-boss dog clamped down on his son's face while sitting on the porch steps

Any dog control laws in your neck of the woods ? Start with a call to animal control and see where that goes. Hope it does better for you than me. Years ago lived in a neighborhood that had trash pickup but the dogs from a few houses down would beat the garbage truck and spread the trash all over the place. Called the dog control guy and he came out ! Then he preceded to tell me that he had delt with those dogs before , that they were mean and he wasn't going back there again. Then he wants to see the dog license for our English Mastiff that never left the back yard that was surrounded by a six foot stockade fence. Didn't have one so he threatened us with a several hundred dollar fine if we didn't get one in three days ! Don't miss it down there any ! Good luck !

Well first off your neighbour is an idiot. Second how about one of these, are they even remotely close to you? Pits can be good dogs if they have good owners and obviously this one doesn't and that will mean only trouble for the pup. If you are up to it, there are several Pitt rescues in Oklahoma.

Bully Breed Humane Society, Lawton, Oklahoma. 580-917-5720, 580-917-5734

Pit Bull and/or Amstaff Rescue 1017 Elm Perry , OK noblepits@gmail.com

Pit Bull Rescue Oklahoma - Home, Blanchard, OK

Pit Essentials Rescue, Norman, OK - pitessentials@yahoo.com

Oklahoma Bully Breed Rescue, Norman, OK - oklahomabullybreedrescue@yahoo.com

Hughs Pet Adoption, Pawhuska, OK, - 918-766-5019

BlackBelt Pit Rescue, Cushing, OK - 918-225-2866 / jenn_adkisson@yahoo.com

Edited to add the last one and noticed you're in the SouthEast of OK. Most of these likely are not close but you will be surprised how far some rescue organizations will travel to save a pup.

Do that which makes you the most comfortable to live with.

Animal control is not available where I live and we use to feed any dogs dropped off at our house until they recovered and took them to a shelter with a donation.

That has gotten too expensive, so we have decided to use other means and I just HATE to shoot dogs. I would really like to punch some people in the nose for how they treat animals.
