Wow, my local dealer is out to lunch!

This is in Langley, B.C, Canada. I just received this quote back for a X740 with the 7-iron deck.

X740 w/ 7-iron = $13,639
JD Rebate (Exp Feb 2012) = -$500
Cash discount = -$300 (doesn't apply to me anyways but keep the math easy)
Setup, PDI, and Freight = $289.86
HST (12% tax in this province:mad:) = $1,574.74

Total = $14,697.60

Is this not an insane price?! This is HIGHER then the John Deere website, which lists this machine for $11,299. Why do us Canadians get punished with higher prices? Even on there website, Canadian pricing is automatically $1,500 MORE on CUT's than the American version.

I am only 45 minutes from the border, maybe I should borrow a utility trailer and head into Washington to find a better deal?

I shop stateside. Even when our dollar is worth more, we still get punished. Cheaper to pay the tolls and fuel. I can drive across a few Sataes for the price difference in a tractor. I've seen a few adds in Tractor House for package deals in the States. you can get a tractor, implements and the trailer for less than just the tractor over here.

I hear ya, I've seen those as well! In Texas they sell 3x20 tractors, WITH a tandem axle flatbed trailer, 1 or 2 implements included, for $25,000. I don't know how they do it, but let me tell you, a 3520 here, with NOTHING, is $25,000.

I refuse to pay almost $15,000 for a riding mower, even if it is a diesel X7xx series, those can be had for 10 brand new down south.

These Canadian JD dealerships must be making a killing.

So how would import duties work if you bought a tractor stateside and took it back to Canada? I would think you'd pay the dealer's local sales tax here in the USA (generally 5-8%) since you're no shipping it, then have to pay something more once you take it back across the boarder, no?

1. There should be no Import Duties
2. To avoid State Sales Tax the purchaser would need to take delivery out of state or purchase in State with no sales tax.
3. Immediately upon crossing the border, the purchaser would be required to declare the purchase and pay applicable Provincial / Federal taxes - in case of the OP it would be 12% of the value after being converted to CDN$ Value.
4. Currency exchange would be an additional cost, plus whatever for gas, food, lodging and any other incidentals.

If a person can get a good enough deal in the US - do the math and see if after everything it's still worthwhile.

Couple of other things. A CDN cannot take advantage of the Deere US financing AFAIK and conversely cannot buy in US and then get CDN financing - from Deere. Need to check is the warranty good for North America - it used to be, but still check. Can or will a US dealer knowingly sell to CDN??

As to the original question - why higher prices in Canada. All the companies have at least 100 reasons why. I once wrote to GM and asked the question. They sent an answer and after cutting through all the spin doctoring - my interpretation was - "Because We Can"

When one sees so many products actually manufactured in Canada and sold substantially cheaper in the US, that's the only answer that makes sense.

We Do It Because We Can Get Away With It

Head to Washington, Small world that dealers very close to me. I go there a few times to get parts there when I don't feel like going all the way out to Abbotsford.

I suspect our Canadian friends get screwed more is a combination of exchange rates, federal and provincial taxes, Canadian business regulations that for all I know are more intrusive than ours, smaller population than the USA (e.g. smaller market + less volume = higher prices), and as CinderSchnauzer said..."Because we can."
