You absolutely will pay duty on anything that is made in Asia. If you are going to buy in the States, it has to be made, or at least assembled, in the Americas ( Canada, US, Mexico ) to avoid duties.

Then you will pay HST at the border on the invoice amount.

Big trend in eastern ontario right now, are the car dealers bringing in off lease vehicles from the US. Not just the small operators, but the big name dealers. They change the instrument cluster and you can't tell the difference, except that the dealer is paying US auction prices and pocketing a bundle on each vehicle.

An old-timer once gave me an interesting solution to getting shafted.

When we were discussing the situation, he asked me, nonchalantly, "which is your good hand"? I told him my right. He said, " put that hand over your arse and run away" :laughing:

I thought that was funny, that the circumstances were so dire, that it required your good hand to protect your integrety. Though at the moment, it was delivered so dryly, I didn't get it. Those are the best :)

MY son bought a 55 acre place last March. Most all of the property is tillable soil and pastures. There is about three acres that needed to mowed all summer around the home. He was just deploying to Iraq when they closed. We knew his wife would need a good mower and garden tractor. We looked at a diesel JD740 and the price. Then we looked at a rebuilt Yanmar from RCO for less then half that with attachments including a nice rototiller and Caroni finish mower. I think we got twice the machine for half the money and have never looked back, the YM1610 is a real tractor the JD740d is an overgrown riding lawn mower and way over priced.

If I can't get financing in the U.S then my plan is hooped to begin with.

My best solution might be to buy from Alberta, there sales tax is only 5% versus our 12% here. I have a lot of friends in the trucking industry, including my own father who runs my direction fairly often, so chances are good I could get it hauled out here for free anyways.

As to the original question - why higher prices in Canada. All the companies have at least 100 reasons why. I once wrote to GM and asked the question. They sent an answer and after cutting through all the spin doctoring - my interpretation was - "Because We Can"

I recall back in the 70's my dad was discussing a $1.00 fee that had recently been added to the phone bill. After much back and forth with the phone company rep repeating that they were charging the new fee because it had been authorized to charge the fee and my dad repeatedly asking what the fee was for, it finally came out that there was no current reason other than they had asked for it and the state commission had granted it.

Another shining example of "Because We Can"

Why can't you buy used, and bring it over the border. Will anyone know that you bought it in the US? It will have hours on the meter

Unfortunately the "because we can" attitude shines through in almost everything I would say. Every company has there fees in place just to steal more of your money.

For example: My local dealer charges $95 if you finance a piece of equipment, instead of paying cash. The $95 charge is apparently to make up for "the massive amount of paperwork involved" Give me a break! Someone is giving you TENS OF THOUSANDS of dollars, and you need to be compensated for scribbling a few dates and signatures that takes no more than 10 minutes?

This world makes me sick, but above all, the greed in it makes me all the more sick.

Not completely true. If manufactured in a "Most favoured Nation" (MFN) there are no duties on tractors, backhoes, mowers and parts, only GST or HST. I believe there will no longer be duties on any machinery imported into Canada which is manufactured in Korea after 01/01/12.

BTW MFN = Japan, Korea, China, France, Italy and many more See the CSBA website for the complete list.

NAFTA Country = USA and Mexico

The Fed's have been reducing tariffs for many years now.:thumbsup:

What do they do regarding the odometer readings? I'll bet a digital odometer is easy to set to whatever mileage one wants with the proper interface, software and passwords.

As Lilly Tomlin's "Ernestine" the phone operator character used to say, "We don't care, we don't have to, we're the phone company."

Yes I know Google is my friend; but how about telling us non-Canucks what GST and HST means. In this case I'm sure HST does not mean HydroStatic Transmission. :D

HSt= harmonized sales tax currently 13% in ontario may be different in other provinces.
PST= provinicial sales tax
GST= Goods and services tax
The Pst and gst combined add up to 13% and combine to become thw harmonized sales tax......... Craig
