BTW, there is a part of me that is thinking: "buy a used bobcat to finish the clean up and a basic tractor to maintain farm". Added together, those would undoubtedly cost more than just buying an upgraded tractor.

That is my Mahindra 7520 and the grapple is this model in the 81" version. When deciding on a grapple, most guys on TBN are convinced that you only need a 48" light weight model, and they are probably right when a guy has less than a 2500lb lift capacity. But as the tractor gets bigger, you can start using the grapple for other things other than just moving loose stuff.

One of the problems with a skid steer is ground clearance, need to keep that in mind.

cederstrand, have you ever looked at a 5035? They are a very nice tractor, I know that if I needed a tractor of that size, it would be at the top of my list of tractors to be considered.

I just checked the link, works fine here. The tractor with loader is about 6500lbs. Put a good 1000lb box blade or rear blade on it and fill the tires and you would have an 8500lb machine working for you. That is about the only way that I see you getting a power shuttle from Mahindra. I believe that the 8500lbs is all that you would be able to get with any of the other tractor makes that you are considering. Typically on the weight of tractors, Mahindra's are as heavy or heavier than everyone else's.

Took a trek into the smaller section of future pasture, across the creek behind my house. Man, there is a LOT of down tree branches and stuff that will need to be cleaned up. And that's before the stumps can be removed, as they are hidden under everything right now. Sure looks like a lot of root-grapple work. Much more than I had thought.

So, exactly what is the "minimum" tractor that will be required for such work? And it had better be mighty sturdy considering how much of this work is on a hillside. Is the Mahindra 6530 really to small for a decent root grapple?

And how hard is it to learn to use a loader on a moderate hill if you have to clutch to change direction? Think beginner. It has been many years since I drove any real tractors. Rob

Rob, if you are working on hillsides, no matter what tractor you get as long as it has inflatable rubber tires, plan on getting them filled. Any tractor will be waaaaaaaaaaaaay more stable with the tires filled. I would have all 4 filled if it were me. In fact all 4 of mine are filled on both my 7520 and 3215. From what you have said, (we have not seen) I believe that the 5035 is plenty big (can be configured to be over 8000lbs) to do everything that you have described. You can get it with an HST so no need to even worry about using a clutch, or the power shuttle, again no need to worry about a clutch. Get yourself a nice 72" grapple and go to work. When you do get a box blade, be sure that you get something that is North of 1000lbs and be sure to get at a minimum of 2 rear remotes no matter what tractor you end up getting. You will want top and tilt cylinders for your 3pt hitch when you are grading.

There are many here on TBN that would say that you should get a smaller grapple, since you are just going to be moving loose stuff. They may be right, but I would still get at the minimum a 72" unit if it were me.

Thanks, Brian. Are you sure the 5035 (@ 49.5hp) has enough "oomf" for a decent grapple? On the site where your grapple is sold, they suggest a 60hp tractor. So, are you recommending one of their regular grapples for the 5035? Seems like the 5035 wouldn't work with yours plus a load, unless I'm missing something. This tractor has a listed weight of 4,939 lbs. I'll drop in on the Mahindra dealer sometime this week and pic his brain.

Oh, any idea what these tractors sell for? Cheers!
