Were you still a child as I was (10) or were you an adult? My first was experience was with a "VAC" Case Tractor vintage 1950 with narrow front and eagle claw 3 point hitch. Ken Sweet

I was about eight when I helped my dad pull out a hedge with a 1948 Fordson Major, after a little instruction I drove the tractor:D

I was about 11 yrs. old on the farm in the Miss. delta and the first tractor I drove was either an 8 or 9 N and the clutch almost got me ..I let my foot slip off and the front end rared way up and fortunately I remembered my instructions and slammed my foot back down on the clutch and the front end settled back down...that same summer my best friend was killed when his grandfathers tractor which he was driving turned over on him as he was going up a hill...It is still fresh in my memory...

At my uncle Bud's and aunt Melva's place in Lone Wolf, Oklahoma. They were leasing an old Indian School and raising cattle. My brother, cousin, and I were bored, had the itchies bad from going through the weedy sunflowers to swim in the pond, had been bucked off of the horse twice that day, so figured we could get the tractor started.

Brother 12, cousin 8, and me 9.......old Ford "n" type.....We got it started ok, and I was the dumb one elected to drive it........"push that in to make it go and stop"...the clutch.........They set the trottle, I let the clutch out and off I went down the 1/4 mile drive.......REALLY FAST>>>>>>>9 year old panic attack>>>>>>at the paved road jumped the ditch and went through the barbed wire fence line across the road........After pulling out a bunch of posts and fencing it stalled out.......whoooooaaaaaa.....deeep trouble......

How did we survive those good times......God bless.....Dennis

Farmall Super A, I am not totally sure of the year of the tractor, maybe a 49 to 53 or so. I am also not sure of my age, but between 8 and 10 I think. Pretty cool if unusual old tractor.

Myself and my cousins of about the same age would have to get out of the tractor seat and stand on the clutch or brake. Ken Sweet

First tractor was a 1958-60 John Deere 420 drove solo about 8 and by 10 was doing plowing, planting, manure spreading etc.. We moved up to a JD 1020 in 1969 a nice upgrade with a FEL (no more hand loading manure!)..

Either a JD 51-"G" or a 53-"60", don't remember which!

I grew up on this one, a 58 720D ES, the 51- "G" was traded in on it when I was 9. ~~ grnspot

The one I'm on in this photo. :D

Just a few years later, I was up on the one my Dad's sitting on. Massey, early 50's. Brand new. Dad was very proud of it. It was a workhorse.

Ken,

A 1949-53 Minneapolis Moline ZA row crop when I was 7 or 8. That tractor was the beginning of the end for our two Percherons.

My grandfather put me on a Farmall H when I was just a little kid. I couldn't handle the clutch, the first time I tried the front end went airborne. He also had me shoot his 30-30 about that time, it just about took my shoulder off.

I think he was trying to kill me. :(

John Deere LA model 2 cylinder about 14 hp 1 row. I was in elementary school maybe 4th or 5th grade. This was a hand crank job. It was all I could do to start it.

Don't remember what happened to that tractor. The next one was a Massey Harris row crop with tricycle front end. Don't know if it was a Junior, 30, 33 or 333 - but something along those lines.

I hauled it on a tandem axle trailer 150 miles from East Texas to Houston for my Dad.

wcampbell47, that's a coincidence. My first tractor experience was with a 1940 John Deere L and I guess I was 11, possibly 12, at the time when Dad bought it when we lived just north of Healdton, OK. I remember him saying it was supposed to be 11 hp, but he figured it was worn enough that it was probably down to about one mulepower.

I was a very big kid for my age and drove my father's 1950 Ferguson TO-20 when I was about 8. The funny part is that I cannot remember a time when I didn't drive that tractor. By the time I was 9 years old, I could hand crank it. Of course, I weighed about 150 lb and was 5' tall. A farm hand my dad hired called me Joe Palooka like the comic book character.
