Wood Burning Stove - is it worth having

FWIW, it appears that the Spare the Air regulations allow for burning even during bans if wood is your only permanently installed heat source. If you don't have PERMANENTLY INSTALLED electric, gas etc heating then you can burn wood anytime you want. At least that's what I read on the website.
Of course that doesn't help people who just want to burn wood some of the time.

I'm sure there are some cabins in the Santa Cruz Mountains that are off-grid as well as a few other places and they are exempt.

The local inspectors are using off-grid as the demarcation point.

Guys, I have read most of the comments submited. Firewood (all hardwoods) in my area of Western PA goes for about $175 for a full cord. This is a lot higher than a couple years ago when the demand was not so great. I have my own wood. What I can't believe is the wimps out there who rush out and purchase a gas splitter. I am 68 years old and hand split 9 cords this year for my boiler. All the work includes cutting the tree down, cutting it into 24" pieces, carrying the pieces through the woods to my RTV. hauling to my woodyard, and then splitting with my 6 lb splitter. It's great exercise! Gee, did I forget stacking it in cords beside my funace. It's wood or Propane at three something a gallon.

PA, JOHN
For the record I read this is didnt feel insulted at all .Ive been called far worse.lol I dont think he meant it as an insult..Pretty scarey when the people ars so insecure they cant brush over a bit of humor these days. I prase him for splitting the 9 cords a year. I could (maybe) but i have a splitter and thats just my way..

This year I was lucky and got access to a landing of 4 year old fir in a stack, we cut it in 2 ft sections piled it in the dump trailer and I split it. I use an 8 lb mall and a sledge to do the job. Next year it is back to the bush to get larch, we do not have the good softwood you guys have but, larch, tamarack is close, Fir is second choise, and pine is OK.
I like to fall the standing dead ones, I have very long ropes, I skid them out with my truck and split it in the bush keeps the mess in the bush. I got over 7 cord this year for next year, and will get at least that if not more next. I can put three cord in my trailer, that is a good days work. I am just 63, and retired so that is the best exercise I get. If I need to I take my loader, it has a 1/2 yard bucket, I fill the bucket and skid out the rest.
We have to get a permit to cut fire wood, it was free, and get the wood on crown land.
Works for me!

Back to the original question. Is it worth having.

Besides the obvious benifit of heat, and the pleasure of seeing the flames, if you are a single guy, like myself, it is VERY MUCH WORTH HAVING!!!!!!

Girls love to come over and snuggle up in front of the fire and watch a movie!!!!!!!!!!

Works for me!

What is the best species of firewood you can readily obtain in your area?
For my area, it is hickory, followed by various oaks. I'd be interested in your answer, and anyone else who would care to comment as well.

Lartch is by far the best it is a high altitude evergreen that looses its needles every winter. It burns long and hot with very little ash.

Over here on England we have to scavenge what wood we can to burn.

My stove burns best on softwood (lumber) I find that old wood from scrap pallets off the industrial estate and old scrap wood that a local joiner drops off for me every now and then (I fixed his truck once) burns nice and hot.

It is hotter than any logs that I have tried and leaves very little ash.

I'm burning a few logs from last year when we cut down a cherry tree and there is also some pear and elm in there but it aint so hot and leaves a lot of ash.:)
