One way is if the utilities are not on...

We keep a phone, power, water and garbage... gas is propane.

yup, so keep them turned on. I doubt that an insurance company would be checking though....but who knows.

Or tell them that the wife and you have separated....a trial separation. And force them to take your $$$. HA

tell them the separation was due to fighting over the insurance coverage

I have heard of this as well.

The neighborhood I lived in back in the city had a vacant house. The house was vacant when I bought my house and it was vacant when we sold ten years later. The vacant house was not on our street but we heard from the neighbors that the house was in some sort of legal dispute. These were not expensive houses and you would think the legal fees would have eaten up the value of the house.

As far was we could tell there was never any vandalism to the house either. The neighbors would often mow the yard since the owners did not. I do not see how the house was insured either. I bet the house is still vacant.

Later,
Dan

Last year after having our farm, home & autos insured with Allstate for over 10 years Allstate cancelled our homeowners policy because they said our fire department had been given a "poor rating". We ended up getting insurance with Liberty Mutual and had better coverage & lower premiums than we had with Allstate. About a month after we changed companies Allstate sent us a couple of letters & even had the nerve to call us saying "we want you back". How stupid can you be to cancel someone's insurance then send them letters & call them to try to get them to come back.

Put in a complaint to your states insurance regulatory agency, everyone has a boss! I ran into this after being a victim of a hit and run, had to eat my deductible and cops were useless. About 6 months later I tracked down the vehicle and owner and took pictures of the damage and my original report to the State police, owner confessed and my insurance company got their money back but they were jerking me around on my deductible refund...made a complaint to the state dept of insurance and had a check a week later.

Unfortunately things like this happen all to often in the modern world of computers...

I had a cancellation with a company that I could not resolve so I switched... Still get calls and letters wanting me back... they blamed it on the legislature and said I was an excellent customer... no claims history.

Heck, my Grandfather was a Fireman's Fund agent going way back. They also cancelled others I know in Oakland that had been with them for thirty of more years... seems by making a minimum policy amount, they could avoid the possibly less desirable areas.

The reason the company gave is they were no longer insuring low value homes... minimum policy was now $500,000.

I told the agent to go ahead and write the half million policy even though I thought insuring for twice the dwelling value would be illegal.

There loss.

The roof on my unattached garage looked bad but was not leaking so I was holding off on putting a new roof on until I finished a couple of other projects until I received a notice from Allstate that if I didn't replace the roof in 30 days they were canceling my homeowners policy.

Long story short, it took me 32 days to get a new roof installed. Allstate cancelled my policy for 2 days and then wrote up a new one.

After Katrina, Allstate decided they didn't want to give storm insurance on their homeowners policies anymore in our area so they cancelled as many of them as they could. They cancelled mine. In Louisiana they can't cancel you if you have had the policy over 3 years and have not had 2 claims in any 3 year period. Even though I had been insured by them for many years, when they rewrote my policy, they claimed it was a new policy and then only 2 years and 8 months old so they had the right to cancel me. The state insurance commission agreed with them.

6 1/2 years later I still have no homeowners insurance because no insurance company will write new policies in our area and the Louisiana state policy of last choice wants $8000 a year to insure me for the same coverage that Allstate and other companies were charging $800 for.

The Kentucky county that I live in built a new jail several years ago and in order to pay for the jail they added a tax to all insurance. It is on life, home, auto and anything else that you can insure. The tax is 10% and then the insurance companies started complaining that it was costing them too much to collect this tax so the county let them add another 1.5% to the 10% for their extra work of having to collect this tax making the total 11.5%.

Grsthegreat----funny

I hate govt intrusion into private businesses but I almost wanna say.there should be a law against this behavior by insurance companies.

I thought I was doing the right thing by letting them know the house was not being lived in. I guess i should have just kept two addresses. Is that legal?

The heat and electric are on, neighbor cuts grass, clears snow and its a half hour away from home.
I'd bet there is less chance of a claim as a cottage than three kids, a little dog and and me and my wife there full time...maybe.

It sure does pay to look around at several quotes. We had Texas Farm Bureau for around 25 years, in the beginning they where usually the cheapest, 2 years ago I started calling around and found a lot better policy for our auto's from Amica. Farm Bureau was giving us the Texas State minimum insurance, (30/60/25 I think) Amica gave us like 200/300/200, or something like that for $1800 less per year! My old FB agent we knew pretty good, said they just couldn't compete with Amica. I don't know about their mortgage program since mine is through my bank right now.

You might want to check their rates on your 2nd mortgage and see what they offer.

Insurance is a numbers game. Today it is done with sophisticated computer programs. If they rate your risk too high, for their current taste, you have to go. It's not usually personal.

Hopefully, if the weather and the economy cooperate, things can get back closer to the way they were.

In the meantime, when my home owners insurance bill comes, it seems more like a mortgage.
