New Bolt-On Hooks

My buddy brought some of his products to a trade show, in an attempt to boost his sales which had been in decline for the last few years.

It's a business his father started from scratch, very small nuts and bolts, wing nuts and other little gadgets that are made from die cast zinc. they had to make there own machines to make the parts. It was a booming business for many years.

Anyway at the show, all these Chinese guys were taking the samples and asking him alot of questions. Within a couple of months, his parts were being advertised in the trade publications. Parts that they made for 40 years were totally ripped off, even specialty parts, there were no patents, so nothing he could do but be POed.

I want to bring my unbiased observations to this thread. For the record, I have two 5/16" chain hooks welded directly to the bucket and mounting fins on the 72" FEL bucket and have lifted the most weight being a complete 350 chevrolet engine block.

kennyd: From what I have researched, you started selling your bolt on hook packages on a TBN "ATTACHMENT" post dated 03/30/2011. Your price then and to date including free U.S. shipping is the same:
1-hook set: $30.00
2-hook sets: $50.00
3-hook sets: $70.00

Vfarm: From what I have researched, you started selling your bolt on hook packages on TBN for the first time in the "ATTACHMENT" forum this month and offer your bolt on hook packages at:
1-hook set: $37.00
2-hook sets : $60.00
3-hook sets: $80.00
Shipping cost unknown as I would have had to commit to a paypal procedure which I won't do.
Vfarm: I didn't see shipping charges up front so let us know your U.S. shipping costs, free or otherwise.

Difference to date between kennyd and Vfarm not including shipping charges:
Vfarm includes a 1/4" backing plate.

Again: An unbiased observation.

I bought two of Ken's bolt on hooks and cannot reccommend them any higher. They are on my CK20. It is not a high horsepower tractor and the loader lifting spec is only about 1100-1200 pounds but I still spent an extra $10-20 and put a backing plate all the way across under the hooks on top of the bucket and another all the way across inside the bucket. So there is about 3/4" of metal that the bolts go thru. I put the plates all the way across the bucket from one hook to the other because I intend to mount the reciever hitch in the top middle of the bucket. I can use the trailer hitch, hooks, or whatever attachment there.

One thing I have found is that you can't wrap a chain around a stump and just put it on one hook. I fear that if you do that very often you will damage the loader. I did this pulling out a metal fence post not realizing the thing was hung on roots. Hooked the chain to the left hook and pulled the right front wheel off the ground before I realized what was going on. What I do is, whatever I'm lifting, wrap both ends of the chain around it, hook it, then pull the chain up on both sides to the bucket hooks letting the slack hand in the center or in the bucket. The attached picture of my daughter moving a sewer pipe shows what I mean except that the chain is hooked to the end of the pipe and not wrapped around it. This keeps the strain equal on both loader arms. And you keep the load level.

It has been over thirty years since I have used a FEL so I am relearning all these things. All you experienced guys can just shake your heads and laugh. Trying to tell the other newbies what not to do before they break something!

By the way that was the 29-year old daughter's first time ever on a tractor. The little Kioti is so easy (fun) to operate that she put the pipe exactly where I needed it with very little direction. And a couple of hours later when the second load of gravel was delivered she came back out of the house and asked if she could drive it some more. Actually brought lemonade to bribe me with. So I got to give a little instruction then set on the porch for an hour of so while she played picking up buckets of gravel and moving them around.

Just got my hooks from Ken's hooker paradise. I'm gonna put them on my L3400 in a day or so. Looks real good, very prompt service.

Is having a slip hook rather than a grap and option? I've thought having one in the middle of the bucket flanked by two grab hooks would be a good set up and cover all lifting situations.

If your are asking me then:

I wish it was. I have been unable to find a slip hook that fits that plates, is suitable for welding (not galvanized), and is at a decent price point.

Not quite a slip hook, but this is my setup, these are three 10K lbs recovery hooks and two of Ken's grab hooks. Honestly, I mostly use the grab hooks.
