Deck size = Pro's and Con's

I think you are making the right choice for an x748, the 60" 7iron deck is a great deck. The only concern is clearance between trees, gates or other obstacles, if you have the clearance I think the 7iron is the best choice.

X740 is what I am getting. I have no use for full time AWD on my property. I haven't heard of many issues with the proportioning valves the AWD tractors use, but if I don't need it, why have the worry?

Sorry I read so many posts on here it is hard to keep them all straight sometimes. At any rate the 7 iron deck is the way to go with a 2ws model.

There are lots of good reasons to have awd but thats up to you.

Never once has the Crapsman been stuck or lacked traction for what we do here. All I need to do is mow grass on flat land and pull a cart every now and again. If that Craftsman has never given me traction issues, I very much doubt a X740 with a diff lock would ever let me down.

Good choice, the 7-iron deck is an awesome deck and will last a lifetime. Also, it is green, so grass stains will not show as badly. I have no doubt the 740 will run that deck like nothing. I had an X 595 (same engine) and a 62" deck and used it to brush hog a rough area in front of a friend's new house. If they won't bog under grass two feet above the hood in cases, they will handle finished lawn well.

I bought my 2520 last summer and did not get a MMM with it. After awhile, I decided that I would like a larger mower to replace the 42" Husqvarna that I had been using. My choices were 1) the 62" 7-iron to fit the 2520 2) a rotary finish mower or 3) a larger lawn/garden tractor.

I ruled out the rotary finish mower as I knew that it would be just a matter of time before I sideswiped something.

I never checked out the 7-iron but I did use my brother's B2920 with 60" MMM. It was fun to use but I found it a bit cumbersome for my lot (a number of trees and flower gardens spread over 1 .75 acres).

I settled on a 2 year old X540 with a 54" deck. It was more money than either of the other two options but I am happier with it. The quality of the cut is great and it was less time consuming than the 'Bota even though the deck was 6" narrower.

I have not had any issues with "clumping" when mowing wet grass and find that previous comment curious. Then again I try to mow every 6 - 8 days.

Just my $.02 worth.

I had a 54" on my X585 for several years and mulched with it. It was a great mower. With my current X748 I purchased a 62" deck, and I mulch with it. Cuts just as well as the 54 and now my cutting radius is a bit tighter.

I kept my 54" and i rough cut with it. I took off the mulch kit and with the diesel, I've never bogged out, even in wet 12" grass. It clumps, but no big deal.

I couldn't tell you why I didn't buy the 7 Iron...i guess it was becuase I was happy with the 54" and had no wear or issues after 6 or 7 years.

I don't think there is a wrong decision .

The more I think about it, I might spring for the AWD X748SE.

I want the SE seat, fenders and brush guard, so if I add those to the X740 order, it's about $1,000 away from a X748SE.

I have been tempted to get the 54 inch deck, but every time I see how much better the clippings come out on the 7-iron decks, I change my mind right back to that. I am trying to avoid bagging clippings, so the finer they come out the better they will blend into the grass.
