Got my Oregon Concealed Handgun Permit finally!

Texas has a required range component, but it's so simple that they might as well not have one.:D

I just renewed and they did not require anything. Something about 2 or third renewal. Also got the permit for 1/2 off (military discount)

Don't go anywhere without it.

Congratulations.

Now don't get me wrong, I would choose the on line course as opposed to sitting in some classroom for hours myself. But I don't really think online is the safest way to certify someones ability and issue carry permits.

No human interaction/ evaluation? :confused2: Did the sheriff even look you up and down once? Someone could display characteristics inconsistent with the privilege/ responsibility to carry and conceal a weapon. With no human one on one evaluation, those clues would go unnoticed.

NH is a shall issue state without range time requirement, background check only. I've not heard of lack of range time/ proficiency testing being an issue so not sure that local LEOs need any more say in the matter than they have. My local PD had an officer that emptied his 9mm at a fleeing DWI suspect, wrecked two cruisers in high speed pursuits (one at another dept where he still works) instigating law suits for both towns. If neither chief can clean their own houses I知 not sure they're qualified to judge my ability to make sound decisions. If LEOs could actually judge character & intention better than anyone else there'd be little need for concealed carry. I agree that online courses lack definitiveness, may be too vulnerable to cheating, and have little value except as revenue generators. MikeD74T

I reckon online courses for everything is coming. Of course online courses for college have been around awhile. In Texas, and I assume other states, you can get an auto insurance premium discount for taking a "defensive driving" course from time to time (3 years in Texas). In years past, it was an all day in a classroom affair, but now AARP and AAA (and maybe some others) offer online versions that get you the same discount, so my wife and I do that.

Yep, at some point you have to take a "continuing education" course in firearms proficiency, but no more frequently than one in 10 years. And of course your CHL is good for 4 to 5 years.

In Missouri, our permits are good for only 3 years, but nothing is needed for renewal other than cash and a background check, no range time.

For years I have been taking continuing education classes online. It works well and it is nice to take the class when you have time versus having to fit the class into your schedule.

The classroom portion of a CCW/CHL class could easily be done with an online class and test.

I agree...online classes are the way to go.

Pennsylvania just does the back ground check. As long as you have no felonies (or certain misdemeanors) and pay $25, you get your license for 5 years.
BTW, you only need a license to carry if you carry concealled. No license required if you carry openly.

Taking the class is just one step. The Sheriffs Office just takes the certificate, application and your fingerprints. (And money, of course) They then perform a background investigation. Usually takes a couple months to get the permit.

Before Missouri became a "shall issue" state, I have seen Sheriffs refuse to issue "Permits to Acquire" when it was still in effect. Without the "shall issue" provision, there will be disparities from one county to the next as to who can get a permit.

But you could appeal that I'm assuming?

CT had a system where you had to get a local town permit first, and yes there were great disparities between the towns, so no, it wasn't the best system.

A thorough back ground check will reveal everything the issuing authority needed or at least that was the opinion of our legislators in Missouri. It was initially vetoed by the governor, veto over ridden then challenged in the Supreme Court before all the dust settled and it became law state law as Sheriffs in St. Louis were refusing to issue.

Others may disagree, but it has been in effect in many states for a lot of years without any issues.

I'm not talking about back ground issues or proficiency at a range.

I'm talking about people who may have no criminal record or history of mental problems. But people who slip thru the cracks so to say, that would still be sketchy, showing irrational behavior, irritability, or other issues that would jump right out a another human being during one on one time.

Maybe that's unconstitutional, like profiling. But I know back in the day, here in CT you had to get signed off by an NRA safety instructor. I guarantee he would not sign off if he saw some underlying condition he feared would pose a risk to public safety. That was his responsibility.

Yeah...you have my sympathies. Illinois is the only state that doesn't have some kind of civilian carry permit. All due to the idiots in Chicago and Cook County.

Well, Maryland "claims" you can get a conceal carry permit issued by the state but that isn't the case. Oh, they will surely accept your $112.00 registration fee but you have a better chance of seeing Jesus than you would a CCW permit.
You have to have a direct threat to your life and it HAS to be documented. Or you have to carry an insane amount of cash with you on a dialy basis as required by your job.
They also do not recognize ANY other state permit..... Gotta Love MARYLANDISTAN!

Luckily i am allowed to Carry under LEOSA. But that doesn't help my wife when she is out in about in this God forsaken state.

Yeah, MD's gun laws are one reason why I moved to PA.
