50 hr. Maint. - valves and head bolts

(Yes, I know, no need to make fun of the fact that it took me 24 months to put 50 hours on it. ;))
I wouldn't poke fun there. I'm slow putting on hours too.

My tractor developed a pretty loud tick starting about 6 months ago.
This part made me smile. You really jumped right onto that problem, didn't you? ;) Good thing the ticking wasn't a bomb.

Let me ask sumting, Are diesels a solid cam? The only cam I had to adjust with a guage spec was a solid cam.

I guess it's just a S3010/Mitsubishi S4L Diesel thing:

More likely model year. My 2011 S3010/Mitsubishi S4L is at 600hrs.

Well I wouldn't have guessed that one. Mine's a 2009 -- I guess that makes me an "ol' timer" when it comes to LS owners. (Not counting all the re-branded LS models though.) I wonder if they changed something with the S4L or just modified maintenance check list?

Doing a valve clearance check is always a good thing, and Cat recommends it be done at the first oil change, anouther good thing is to check the dipstick for the oil level is right. Oil added to the low mark, the full mark. I am a firm believer that maintenance is cheap parts, and down time, are not.

I'm no mechanic, but the Mitsubishi S4L diesel in my S3010 appears to be. Only other time I had to adjust valves was on my long gone '73 VW Super Beetle, which was a 15-20 minute job every 3000 miles if I remember correctly. Here's a nice source of information:

Some run a hydraulic lifter some do not. If you have a book and it says you have to set the valves, and it has a clearance it has a solid cam, it could have hydraulic lifters and you have to change push tubes or an overhead cam and you have to change a disc adjuster.
Many engines use different systems.

Both have solid cams. It's the lifter which is either hydraulic, or solid. Solid lifters need the clearance checked. For the little lift diesel cams have, they all should be designed with hydraulic lifters now.

Kubota MX4700/5100 with 2403 engine is every 800hrs. As stated above it depends on design, and after initial beak in needs some adjustment.

Not hard to do, but was wondering why nobody had mentioned it -- now I know!

I have that engine in my Montana and I don't recall anything about valves for 50 hours.

Funny though... right above that it says to check and tighten ALL bolts, nuts, unions every 8-10hrs! That would be a full time job!

Probably written by lawyers.
